Typical Job Duties: To maintain the school buildings and efficient management of the facility as to usefulness, appearance, safety hazards, cleanliness and minor repairs not requiring skilled tradesman. Other job-related duties will be assigned. The substitute custodian will perform all duties of the position within the scope of Columbia School District policies and procedures.

Job Responsibilities

  • Accomplish all tasks in a professional manner.
  • Secure building.
  • Conduct regular inspections of the facility and report needed repairs on work order forms.
  • Set up for special programs.
  • Make minor repairs (chairs, tables, etc.).
  • Perform general labor as needed: i.e. moving equipment, desks, tables, etc.
  • Perform related duties as assigned by principal.
  • Work cooperatively with students, teachers and administrators.
  • Possess basic operational knowledge of and ability to operate custodial equipment and the heating/cooling systems.
  • Raise/lower flags.
  • Use power equipment and hand tools such as shovel, broom, mop, squeegee, burnish, and vacuum required for the cleaning and general maintenance of floors, walls, carpets and furniture.
  • Clean and sanitize toilets, shower rooms and fixtures.
  • Empty wastebaskets and trash containers.
  • Dust furniture and light fixtures; clean chalkboards and erasers.
  • Sweep, mop and polish floors. Wash windows.
  • Replace light bulbs, tissue and other restroom supplies.
  • Clean sidewalks and keep driveway litter free, perform snow and ice removal.
  • Perform all other related duties as assigned by supervisor pertaining to job classification.
  • Performs all duties of the position within the scope of Columbia School District policies and procedures, including regular attendance and punctuality.

General Requirements

  • Language Skills: Ability to read, product labels, and procedures. Ability to write effectively, and use e-mail correspondence. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions.
  • Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers, fractions, and decimal numbers. Ability to calculate percentages, proportions, area, circumference, and volume.
  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw conclusions. Ability to interpret variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Physical Demands

  • Mobility: Regularly use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls. Frequently required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, and use ladders.
  • Senses: Ability to listen, communicate effectively in person, over the phone, and by radio; close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Lifting: Regularly lift and/or move up to 35 pounds; frequently up to 50 pounds; occasionally over 100 pounds.

Work Environment

  • Physical Hazards and conditions: Work near moving mechanical parts; exposures to weather, chemicals, noise, and potential electrical hazards; may require noise protection and work on rooftops or in confined spaces.
