Overview
YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PROFESSIONAL-SPORTS & RECREATION -(Rutledge Pearson Elementary School)
This position is designed to help members develop physical fitness, reduce stress, promote positive use of leisure time, appreciate the environment, and improve interpersonal skills. The Sports & Recreation Youth Development Professional is part of a team-oriented Club staff dedicated to serving our youth and creating an optimal Club Experience. This role will plan, supervise and implement a variety of high-yield activities and targeted programs within a health and life skills focus. The position is responsible for ensuring youth development principles are incorporated into all programs and activities; providing guidance and discipline to ensure a safe and positive environment for youth; incorporating character development, age-appropriate and gender-specific programs and activities; ensuring culturally diverse programs are implemented; and assisting in the planning, implementation, and delivery of activities for youth ages 6 to 18.
Key Roles (Essential Job Responsibilities)
- Planning and implementing a variety of sports and recreation programs for members of all ages, including Triple Play, Play Ball, RBI, ALL STARS, Jr. RBI, and Play Breaks
- Recruiting and retaining youth for sports programs
- Working with other staff in the club to implement these programs throughout the school year
- Coaching teams in Boys & Girls Clubs sports leagues
This position helps members make appropriate choices about their education, career, social, physical and emotional needs as they relate to health and future goals. The position also assesses the developmental needs, interests and characteristics of youth to develop targeted programs that result in an outcome-driven club experience.
Health and Safety
- Ensure a healthy and safe environment, supervising members in the program area
- Maintain the cleanliness of the program area
- Maintain an inventory of program equipment and supplies in good order; recommend requisitions as necessary
Program Administration
- Prepare weekly reports for the Program Director/Unit Director regarding activities, special programs, upcoming events, attendance, and other required reports
- Maintain a daily written schedule; ensure programs begin and end on time
Additional Responsibilities
- Participate in additional special programs and/or events
- Evenings/weekends work may be involved
- May be required to drive Club van (requires valid driver’s license and a three-year clean driving record)
- Other duties as assigned
Relationships
Internal: Maintains close, daily contact with club staff and volunteers, club members, and supervisor to receive/provide information, discuss issues, explain guidelines/instructions, instruct, and advise/counsel.
Requirements
Education
High School diploma or GED
Ability to pass DCF Level II background screening and drug test
Experience
- Knowledge of youth development
- Ability to motivate youth and manage behavior issues
- Ability to work with the public
- Ability to plan and implement quality programs specific to Sport and Recreation
- Ability to organize and supervise members in a safe environment
Work Environment
This position generally works Monday to Friday, 2–3 hours between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM, but may require longer hours outside of this schedule and occasional weekends when necessary. Work is conducted indoors and outdoors.
Physical and Mental Requirements
- Ability to sit, stand and walk for long periods; bending and squatting on occasion
- Ability to lift up to 20 lbs. on occasion
- Ability to hear at a normal conversational level
- Ability to maintain a high energy level when necessary
- High degree of emotional intelligence
