The Animal Health Branch (AHB) functions as California's organized, professional veterinary medical unit to protect public health, animal agriculture, and the economy from catastrophic animal diseases and other related health and agricultural problems. AHB addresses livestock diseases and issues that require statewide coordinated resources; implements programs that protect public health and animal agriculture; and ensures the availability, affordability, and wholesomeness of food.

The Animal Health Branch is advertising to fill a Veterinarian Specialist (General) within the Sacramento Headquarters Office.

Under general guidance of the Animal Health Branch (AHB) Research Scientist Supervisor II, the Veterinarian Specialist (General) plans, organizes, coordinates, and directs activities related to administrative, animal health, food safety, emergency management with duties including but not limited to:

Leading Veterinarian for Livestock Health Programs

Plan, organize, and coordinate activities that are associated with administering laws, regulations, policies, and procedures related to the Branch's Swine, Small Ruminant and/or Bovine programs

Serve as a subject matter expert for swine, small ruminant and/or cattle diseases or health problems in the State

Oversee cooperative statewide swine and cattle health programs including, but not limited to, bovine tuberculosis, swine and cattle brucellosis, bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), Scrapie, Pseudorabies (PRV), Classical Swine Fever (CSF), and African Swine Fever (ASF) and state regulated programs including trichomoniasis

Recommend changes in legislation, regulations, policies, and procedures related to Livestock Programs and functions as indicated by national and local needs

Develop cooperative agreement work plans and reports as needed

Coordinate and Develop Outreach Material, Research & Educational Material on Livestock Issues

Travel anywhere in the state to provide public education on swine, small ruminant and/or cattle health programs to members of the swine and cattle industry, including veterinary students and practicing veterinarians

Research scientific literature to provide technical support for livestock disease programs

Design, analyze, present, and publish scientific field research in cooperation with university, state, and federal partners

Travel anywhere in the state to participate in meetings with federal, state, and county health officials on public health/One Health issues such as tuberculosis and brucellosis

The applicant may be located anywhere in California, although the Central Valley is preferred.

The position will require overnight travel by various modes of transportation.

Working Conditions

The incumbent performs the duties of this position both indoors and outdoors. The duties are primarily conducted indoors. The cubicle is equipped with a built-in modular desk, office chair, a computer with various software programs, a telephone and voice mail and accommodations for adequate filing space.

Travel (including nights, weekends, and holidays) for extended periods may be required for meetings and events as well as during an emergency response. Travel on short notice may be required upon activation for emergency response. During emergency response periods, duties may require working long shifts at hours other than the normal work hours.

The incumbent must follow CDFA, Division, and Branch employee health and safety policies.

Regular or recurring telework may occur as part of the incumbent's ongoing regular schedule in accordance with CDFAs Telework Policy.
