Description Under general supervision, performs specialized skilled work in pavement marking installation and maintenance. Work involves maintaining all pavement markings throughout the city as the primary function and performing maintenance on equipment. Work also involves prelining new pavement work. Employee must exercise some independent judgment in the performance of assigned tasks. Reports to the Paint Supervisor.

Essential Job Functions

Drive long line paint truck in operation and inspect the installation of thermoplastic materials Preline for new pavement markings Trains in the use of various types of pavement marking equipment. Performs operational tests and inspections of facility systems and components. Inspects and repairs pavement marking equipment; performs maintenance; reports malfunctions to supervisor. Receives and/or reviews various records and reports including vehicle maintenance reports, preline drawings, and SDS forms. Prepares and/or processes various records and reports including activity reports and equipment checklists. Refers to equipment maintenance manual, MSDS forms, MUTCD, employee handbook, traffic marking plans, codes / laws / regulations, publications and reference texts, etc. Uses a variety of tools such as calibration tools, distance measuring equipment, hand and mechanic tools, mobile communications, etc. Uses a variety of supplies such as maintenance forms, traffic marking paint, reflective beads, replacement parts, etc. Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals including Paint Supervisor, citizens and motorists Responsible for traffic control; provides information to the public. Performs minor administrative tasks. Assists other divisions and departments. Performs other related duties as required. Required Qualifications

Requires a high school diploma or GED equivalent supplemented by twenty-four to thirty-six months of experience in pavement marking operations ; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must possess a valid Class B CDL driver's license. Must obtain Class A CDL in 120 days Supplemental Information

Knowledge of the methods and procedures that pertain to the performance of duties of the Highway Paint Equipment Operator. Ability to comprehend, interpret, and apply regulations, procedures, and related information. Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the collection and transportation of materials. Ability to safety and skillfully operate trucks and equipment necessary for assigned duties. Has knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the industry. Ability to work effectively despite occasional exposure to extreme weather and temperatures, wetness/humidity, machinery hazards, traffic hazards, dust, fumes, above-average noise, odors, smoke, vibrations, hazardous waste, etc. Knowledge of basic maintenance methods. Ability to offer training and assistance to co-workers and employees of other departments as required. Ability to learn and utilize new skills and information to improve job performance and efficiency. Has the mathematical ability to handle required calculations. Ability to read and understand work orders, equipment manuals, and other materials pertaining to the responsibilities of the job. Ability to prepare simple records with accuracy and in a timely manner. Knowledge of the terminology used within the department. Knowledge of how to maintain effective relationships with personnel of other departments, professionals, and members of the public through contact and cooperation. Has knowledge of how to react calmly and quickly in emergency situations. Ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural, or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things. Ability to speak/signal people to convey or exchange information.Includes receiving instructions, oral and written assignments and/or directions from superiors Ability to apply principles of rational systems to solve practical problems and to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form. Ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions.Must be able to use and interpret auto mechanic terminology and language. Ability to utilize mathematical formulas; to add and subtract totals; to multiply and divide. Ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape. Ability to differentiate between colors and shades of color. Ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under minimal levels of stress.

Hybrid Members Hybrid plan members contribute 4 percent of creditable compensation to the defined benefit plan and 1 percent to the defined contribution plan each month. Members may voluntarily contribute up to an additional 4 percent in 0.5 percent increments to the defined contribution plan each month. Members can increase or decrease their voluntary contributions on a quarterly basis. With the mandatory and voluntary contributions to the defined contribution component of the plan, members can contribute a maximum of 5 percent with a 3.5 percent match from the employer. Members invest in various investment options that best fit their needs. Vested after 5 years in the defined benefit part of the plan. Vested in phases based on years in the Defined Contribution part of the Plan. The retirement eligibility for a full or reduced retirement pension in the Hybrid Plan is very detailed. Paid Time Off (PTO) Yearly earnings 120 Hours (1-59 months), 144 Hours (60-119 months), 168 Hours (120- 179 months), 192 Hours (180 and over) Sick Leave Part Time employees earn 4 hours per month Sick leave accrues at the end of the month and may be accrued with no ceiling.

Personal Leave All regular full time employees are granted 24 hours of personal leave each calendar year. Personal leave must be preapproved and is not cumulative. All deductions are made on a pre-tax basis and will reduce your taxable income. Life Insurance The city pays the entire premium for life insurance coverage in the amount of 2 times annual salary for natural death and 4 times annual salary for accidental death. Optional Life Insurance Employees have the option of electing additional life insurance coverage in the amount of 1, 2, 3 or 4 times their annual salary. Employees may only purchase optional life insurance on spouses and children if they are enrolled in optional life insurance for themselves.

Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) 12 weeks of job protected leave for leaves approved in accordance with the Family Medical Leave Act. Employees receive continuation of health insurance, job protection and consideration for a comparable job when available, or an equivalent job, upon return to work. Funeral Leave 24 hours of paid leave of absence in case of death in immediate family. Holidays Suffolk follows the Virginia State holiday calendar as set by the Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia.
