Job Description - Virginia Tech’s Division of Student Affairs seeks a Housekeeping Worker to support the Student Engagement and Campus Life (SECL) team in Blacksburg, VA. The role maintains a clean, sanitary, and safe environment in SECL facilities, including lounges, offices, lobbies, stairs, restrooms, showers, windows, and other assigned venues. Responsibilities include floor maintenance, dusting, trash collection, snow and ice removal from entrances and sidewalks, and related custodial duties. The position supports events in reservable spaces when needed.

  1. You’ll join the Student Engagement and Campus Life (SECL) team, which focuses on uplifting the student experience by cultivating affirming environments, promoting holistic well‑being, and delivering exceptional services, programs, and facilities.
  2. You’ll report to the Housekeeping Supervisor. This is a regular, full‑time, 100% staff appointment.
  3. You’ll be primarily responsible for maintaining and replenishing supplies in assigned areas and reporting any facility repairs or needs to management. You’ll operate powered and manual cleaning equipment; mix chemicals with proper proportions from established guidelines; and be responsible for the care and handling of custodial operations supplies, equipment, and assigned keys. Occasionally supports Event Operations Staff in the preparation of events scheduled in SECL facilities.
  4. You’ll have the opportunity to grow with a developmental plan and potential advancement within the Department and the Division.
  5. You’ll be offered a base compensation package starting at $33,280.00 along with a comprehensive benefits package that includes health insurance, paid leave, retirement, tuition assistance, VT discounts, and more.

Required Qualifications

  • Excellent customer service and communication skills for interaction with employees, students, and visitors at a large university campus facility.
  • Knowledge of commercial/industrial cleaning methods.
  • Ability to work independently with little supervision; safely mix chemicals with proper proportions from established guidelines; operate both manual and electrically powered cleaning equipment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in cleaning of institutional or commercial areas.

Additional Information

  • Work schedules offered: Saturday to Wednesday 6:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.; Sunday to Thursday 3:00 p.m. – 11:30 p.m.; Monday to Friday 6:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. Final placement determined based on departmental needs and candidate availability.
  • The successful candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction check.
