Overview Of Role / Essential Job Functions
Performs a variety of general laundry and housekeeping/cleaning duties to provide quality laundry service and to maintain the nursing center in a sanitary, attractive, and orderly condition.

Resident Rights / Safety and Sanitation / Staff Development
Resident Rights
- Knows and respects patient rights.
- Ensures all protected health information is kept confidential.
- Reports all complaints made by patients to supervisor.
- Reports all allegations of resident abuse, neglect and/or misappropriation of patient property.
Safety and Sanitation
- Follows established safety policies and procedures.
- Observes safety needs of patient as indicated in care plan.
- Wears and/or uses safety equipment and supplies when indicated and properly trained to use.
- Demonstrates job-specific knowledge of fire and disaster preparedness during drills or actual situations.
Staff Development
- Attends and participates in scheduled in-service training, educational classes and meetings, including safety committee.
- Participates in QAA process.
Responsibilities
- Inventories clothing and personal items brought in with new residents and marks with proper identification.
- Picks up soiled linen from each wing throughout shift; prepares articles for washing by unbuttoning, turning pockets out, and unrolling sleeves; sorts soiled laundry into appropriate loads for washing.
- Washes contaminated linens separately from other linens.
- Follows standard washing procedures to add soap solution, bluing, and other chemicals to wash.
- Dries linens and residents’ clothing in dryer.
- Presses garments; checks condition of linens for worn spots or tears; folds linen and returns a sufficient amount of linen to clean linen room for daily needs; distributes laundry to appropriate resident.
- Disposes of unmarked clothing left in laundry.
- Maintains equipment used in performing duties; cleans washers and dryers, dryer lint filters, and soap dispensers at end of shift; cleans up spills from floor into drain.
- Cleans trash receptacles and replaces liners daily as assigned.
- Follows cleaning schedule for housekeeping duties including offices, restrooms, activity room, kitchen restroom, service entrance and therapy room, entrances and exits, utility areas, closets, lounges, lobbies, and halls; performs emergency housekeeping as needed.
- Cleans, dusts, washes and disinfects fixtures, floors, walls, doors and ceilings; cleans and polishes various fixtures; changes slip covers and arranges furniture as needed; replenishes soap and towels.
- Empties and cleans wastebaskets.
- Works with maintenance staff to service floors, patient rooms, baths, lounges, nurses’ stations, and offices as assigned.
- Performs terminal cleaning in patient rooms when patients are discharged or transferred and prepares rooms for new occupants.
- Performs cleaning duties in isolated units when patients are transferred according to procedures.
- Vacuums and shampoos carpeting and rugs.
- Maintains order in supply room and cleanliness of lockers and equipment; maintains equipment used in housekeeping duties.
- Performs miscellaneous assignments as required.
Education / Experience / Physical Demands
Education and Experience
- High School Diploma or equivalent preferred; ability to read and understand directions.
- Previous housekeeping/laundry experience preferred.
Physical Demands
- Exerting up to 60 pounds of force occasionally, and up to 20 pounds of force frequently to move objects; may involve climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and handling.

- Inside with exposure to noise and vibration, heat, temperature changes, wet and humid conditions, and exposure to disagreeable conditions including odors and infection risk.

- Receives assignments from supervisor and has frequent contact with patients, center guests, and other housekeeping/laundry aides.
