Summary

Senior Customs Specialist North America role at SGL Carbon. This position coordinates and advises on Global Trade issues for SGL Carbon NA sites and is the key person for NA Customs compliance. The Senior Customs Specialist NA manages, coordinates, directs, supervising and audits all regional and group-wide Customs and Preference Processes, directly or via the Customs delegate network. The role also serves as the substitute for the Senior Export Control Specialist NA in their absence.

Key Accountabilities

  • Serve as the internal expert for NA Customs laws, tariffs and regulations, and the corresponding internal policies and externally regulated procedures related to Global Trade.
  • Monitor changes in NA customs laws, tariffs and regulations.
  • Inform relevant managers and executives about new or revised customs laws/regulations/tariffs and their potential impacts on SGL business.
  • Coordinate and supervise all Customs Delegates NA.
  • Provide timely information and adequate training to Customs Delegates NA and other SGL employees related to NA Customs compliance (e.g., import, export, HS-codes, preferences, origins, supply chain security).
  • Harmonize, manage, coordinate and authorize applicable processes for NA Customs (e.g., import, export, HS-codes, preferences, origins, supply chain security).
  • Act as SGL liaison with government committees, agencies and officials in NA as required.
  • Manage, monitor and coordinate all Customs Authorizations (directly and indirectly).
  • Manage, monitor and coordinate C-TPAT compliance (directly).
  • Report errors, anomalies and alleged violations (using attorney-client privilege) and support investigations and remedial actions (compliance incidents).
  • Execute customs-related internal audits and support external audits by authorities.
  • Manage, monitor and audit external Customs service providers.
  • Provide internal expertise for special cases and liaise with external experts in extraordinary cases, if necessary.
  • When the GTS team is unavailable, act as an emergency backup for the operation of SAP GTS.
  • Align with other relevant functions in SGL comprising Logistics, SCM, Sales, Procurement as required.

Skills and Knowledge
  • 4-year bachelors degree from an accredited university or college.
  • Strong knowledge of US Federal and State agencies and regulations pertaining to global trade, including US Customs and Border Protection, USMCA, duties and tariffs.
  • Demonstrated ability to make independent judgments regarding the interpretation and application of US regulations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Analytical thinker/problem solver.
  • Highly collaborative with ability to resolve conflict and explain complex information for effective decision making.
  • Ability to work well with and respect different cultures (intercultural sensitivity).
  • Fluent in English; other languages preferred.
  • U.S. Citizenship, U.S. Lawful Permanent Residency or U.S. Protected Individual Status (8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3)) Required.

Experiences
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant regulatory compliance experience, specifically customs, including documentation and declaration requirements, classifications, tariffs and duties; experience using ACE.
