Job Description
Wonderful College Prep Academy is accepting applications for a Success Coach for the GEAR UP grant. The Success Coach initially supported 6th and 7th-grade students and has followed student cohorts into their high school years. The Success Coach provides mentoring, outreach, and support services to students in their current GEAR UP cohort to include the following: implementing activities to improve the number of students who have knowledge and experience of different colleges and careers available, encouraging high academic achievement to obtain goals of attending college, and pursuing a career of interest.
This position will report to the GEAR UP Coordinator at Sanger West High School. Workdays will be in alignment with Sanger Unified School District and Wonderful College Prep Academy calendars, with occasional hours on Saturday.
The Success Coach's responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
Assess students' needs, set academic goals, and formulate a comprehensive plan for assistance in collaboration with the student, parent, teachers, counselors, other agencies, and community partners
Help support students in the classroom by providing a curriculum that includes goal setting, academic monitoring, career and college research, and readiness
Communicate regularly with parents and/or guardians of students on roster to discuss academic progress, obstacles, and needed efforts by students and parents; should include face-to-face contact, phone, e-mail, and other as needed communication opportunities
Help increase family knowledge of career and college opportunities
Participate in all meetings and events related to GEAR UP
Other duties as assigned
Qualifications: Qualifications
BA/BS Degree.
Two years’ experience with education support services.
An eager, flexible learner and problem solver who feels comfortable taking initiative.
A self-starter with exceptional work ethic and the ability to work well away from colleagues and management.
Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
An ability to quickly establish rapport and communicate well with scholars.
A valid California driver's license is required.
Bilingual in Spanish is a plus.
COVID vaccination will be required for this position unless candidate has a legally valid exemption.
ABOUT THE GEAR UP GRANT:
GEAR UP is a federally funded Title III Grant. Wonderful College Prep Academy, in partnership with Avenal and Sanger Unified School Districts, will work with 6th and 7th-grade students from four middle schools to prepare them for college. The Federal Department of Education website for GEAR UP is http://www2.ed.gov/programs/gearup/index.html.
This discretionary grant program is designed to increase the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education. GEAR UP provides seven-year grants to states and partnerships to provide services at high-poverty middle and high schools. GEAR UP grantees serve an entire cohort of students beginning no later than the seventh grade and follow the cohort through high school and their first year of college.
