GENERAL SUMMARY Greets, instructs, directs, and schedules patients and visitors. Serves as a liaison between patient and medical support staff. Provides staff support to the Physician in operating the practice computer system including the total medical billing functions, obtaining clinical information/data and performing duties required for the medical office visit.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Check in patients, verifying demographic info and making necessary changes in computer. Occasionally, escort patients to exam rooms and perform/document vital signs and other pertinent information per provider preference. 2. Collect any co-payments due at date of service. Including managing Credit Card Transactions and the collection of patients insurance information. 3. Copy medical records as requested by insurance companies, patient transfers and for legal purposes. The PCP needs to approve release of records before they can be mailed form our facility. Send billing fees for these services according to our guidelines. Scan a copy of the request in the patient's file. Document the transactions on the PHI Log in Next-Gen 4. Assist in scheduling follow-up appointments as patient checks-out and any other appointment necessary for the patient. 5. Collects data regarding patient care needs and response to nursing care provided. 6. Implements appropriate measures to meet the patient/SO learning needs. 7. Demonstrates overall ability to learn and use current technology. 8. Performs documentation duties in the patient record that is timely, accurate and concise. 9. Demonstrates awareness and sensitivity to patients/SO rights, as identified by the Patient Bill of Rights. 10. Functions with an awareness and application of safety issues as identified by the institution. 11. Performs efficiently in emergency patient situations following established protocols, remaining calm, informing appropriate persons, and documenting events. 12. Demonstrates sound knowledge base and actions in the care and decision making for designated patient population. 13. Participates actively in staff development and orientation activities for the unit. 14. Participates in unit and division of nursing PI Activities, routine audits and attainment of nursing goals. 15. Remains flexible in staffing patterns and resolution of staffing conflicts; participates in temporary assignment measures within the division of nursing. 16. Demonstrates empathetic attitude toward patients of all diversities. 17. Demonstrates an understanding of patients scheduling and schedules patients appropriately. 18. Follows Infection Control Fundamentals r/t: Standard Precautions, Hand washing, disposal of bio hazardous materials, and aseptic technique.

19. Adheres to policies and procedures, federal/state/local requirements and regulatory bodies.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS 1. Requires sitting for long periods of time; also stooping, bending and stretching for files and supplies. Occasionally lifts files or paper weighing up to 30 pounds. 2. Physical strength to perform the following lifting tasks: • Floor to waist - 40 pounds • 14" to waist - 50 pounds • Waist to shoulder - 20 pounds • Shoulder to overhead - 10 pounds • Carry 40 pounds for 30 feet • Push 40 pounds/force for 30 feet • Pull 40 pounds/force for 10 feet

3. Requires manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, type at 40 wpm, operate a calculator, telephone, copier, and such other office equipment PRN 4. Vision must be correctable to 20/20 and hearing must be in the normal range for telephone contacts. 5. It is necessary to view and type on computer screens for long periods and to work in an environment which can be very stressful.

Qualifications

EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES REQUIRED 1. High School graduation or GED, experience preferred 2. Active Certified Nursing assistant required. 2. One year secretarial and medical billing experience. 3. Typing ability of 40 wpm. Work processing experience. 4. Must be familiar with CPT and ICD- 9CM codes, either through education or experience as demonstrated by past performance. 5. Knowledge of medical terminology and the insurance industry. 6. Knowledge of grammar, spelling, and punctuation to type correspondence. 7. Skill in operating a computer and photocopy machine. 8. Ability to read, understand, and follow oral and written instruction. 9. Ability to sort and file materials correctly by alphabetic or numeric systems. 10. Telephone etiquette skills with ability to communicate clearly. 11. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, employees, and the public. 12. Knowledge of medical billing/collection practices. 13. Knowledge of Medicare. 14. Knowledge of governmental legal and regulatory provisos related to collection activities. 15. Skill with computer applications and use of calculator. 16. Ability to deal courteously with patients, co-workers, and others.
