In-jail services include medical, nursing, mental health, substance use treatment, social work, dental and vision care, discharge planning, and reentry support. CHS is also a pivotal partner in New York City's criminal justice reform efforts.

Work Shifts

Time: 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM Various Locations at Rikers Island Duties & Responsibilities

The Assistant Director of Nursing will play a key role in supporting the development and management of nursing services within the organization. This individual will be responsible for overseeing the coordination of nursing teams, ensuring adherence to care standards, and actively contributing to the creation and implementation of nursing policies, education programs, and operational procedures. The Assistant Director of Nursing will also assist in budgeting, performance evaluation, staffing, and quality assurance efforts, ensuring that patients receive the highest level of care.

Responsibilities include: (Detailed Task) Nursing Services Planning and Evaluation Support the planning, organization, direction, coordination, and evaluation of nursing services within the assigned facility, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered care across all areas of the facility. Staff Guidance and Education Provide guidance, training, and educational support to nursing and ancillary staff. Actively contribute to sitewide in-service programs and continuous professional development initiatives to ensure the team remains up-to-date with best practices and standards of care. Administrative and Managerial Oversight Execute administrative and managerial responsibilities with discretion and independent judgment. Oversee and supervise a team of licensed and unlicensed medical personnel, ensuring efficient and effective daily operations. Direct Nursing Care and Treatment Coordination Deliver direct nursing care as needed and manage the coordination of treatment processes within the facility. Ensure effective patient outcomes through the timely and accurate administration of care plans, and maintain close monitoring of patient progress. Examples of Typical Tasks:

Policy and Standards Development Contributes to the development of nursing service and education policies, objectives, and standards to ensure alignment with organizational goals. Budget Support Supports the preparation and management of nursing personnel, supply, and equipment budgets to optimize resource allocation and cost efficiency. Administrative and Program Implementation Assists in the creation, implementation, and oversight of administrative procedures and patient care programs aimed at enhancing service delivery. Clinical Division Oversight May oversee the planning, organization, direction, coordination, and evaluation of nursing services within a major clinical division or home health agency, including patient transfer coordination. Nursing Education Programs Supports the planning, organization, and execution of nursing education programs to ensure ongoing professional development. Staff Orientation and Ongoing Education Facilitates the orientation process for new nursing staff and provides additional support and education for staff requiring further development. Performance Evaluations Conducts regular performance evaluations for nursing staff, ensuring adherence to established quality care standards and identifying areas for improvement. Shift Supervision May be responsible for overseeing and coordinating nursing services during evening and night shifts, ensuring continuous care delivery. Staff Coordination Assigns duties to nursing team members, ensuring effective coordination and collaboration to optimize patient care delivery. Line Staff Supervision Takes on the responsibility of supervising line staff nurses as needed, providing guidance and support. Reporting Prepares and submits regular reports on administrative matters related to staffing, patient management, and operational matters. Quality Assurance Actively participates in the direction and implementation of nursing quality assurance programs, ensuring compliance with best practices. Meetings and Collaboration Attends or chairs regular nursing department and organizational-level staff meetings to ensure open communication and alignment of goals. Assessment of Nursing Services Assesses the quality of nursing services through rounds, chart reviews, and direct evaluation of patient care to identify areas for improvement. Operational Reporting and Recommendations Provides detailed reports and recommendations regarding nursing services operations to the Deputy Director of Nursing, identifying opportunities for improvement. Staffing Schedules Coordinates timely submission of monthly staffing schedules ensuring appropriate staffing levels for continuity of patient care. On-Call Responsibilities In the absence of the Deputy Director of Nursing may assume 24-hour on-call responsibility and provide facility coverage as needed, ensuring nursing operations run smoothly at all times. Regulatory Compliance Ensures nursing staff compliance with relevant regulations, protocols, and organizational policies to maintain high standards of care. Research and Development Engages in research activities to stay updated on advancements in nursing care practices, integrating best practices into the organization's operations. Complaint Resolution Investigates and addresses internal and external complaints or concerns including but not limited to nursing services, conducting special studies and investigations when necessary to ensure high-quality patient care and satisfaction.

Minimum Qualifications 1. Licensed and currently registered to practice as a professional nurse in New York State, plus (2) or (3), below. 2. Masters Degree in Nursing Administration, Education, Clinical Specialty or equivalent field and five years of satisfactory nursing experience, of which three years shall have been in a supervisory or teaching capacity; or a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing and six years of satisfactory nursing experience, four years of which shall have been in a supervisory or teaching capacity. 3. A satisfactory equivalent of education and experience. However, all candidates must be licensed and currently registered to practice as a Professional Nurse in New York State.

Department Preferences

Licensure : Must be licensed and currently registered to practice as a professional nurse in New York State, in addition to meeting one of the qualifications outlined below. Educational and Experience Requirements : Alternative Qualifications : Candidates with an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. However, all candidates must hold a current New York State professional nursing license. Option 1 : Master's Degree in Nursing Administration, Education, Clinical Specialty, or a related field, and a minimum of five years of satisfactory nursing experience, including at least three years in a supervisory or teaching role. Option 2 : Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing and a minimum of six years of satisfactory nursing experience, with at least four years in a supervisory or teaching capacity. Direct Line of Promotion :

This position is part of the managerial class, and there is no direct line of promotion associated with it.
