Industry Expertise:
7–10 years of experience in heavy civil excavation estimating.
Educational Background:
Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or related field .
Technical Skills:
Advanced proficiency in construction estimating software (HeavyBid, HCSS, or similar).
Leadership Ability:
Proven success mentoring junior estimators and supporting preconstruction teams.
Analytical Skills:
Ability to perform detailed quantity take-offs, labor/equipment productivity analysis, and accurate pricing for excavation, grading, and utility projects.
Responsibilities:
Lead preparation of detailed cost estimates for heavy civil excavation projects including site preparation, grading, trenching, and utilities.
Analyze project plans, specifications, and geotechnical reports to prepare comprehensive estimates.
Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and subcontractors to gather essential information and validate assumptions.
Review and interpret schematics and blueprints to determine project scope and requirements.
Calculate quantities of materials, labor, and equipment needed for large-scale excavation and grading operations.
Prepare bid proposals and lead competitive bidding processes.
Provide support in negotiating contracts with subcontractors and suppliers.
Mentor and guide junior estimators, ensuring consistency and accuracy across all estimates.
Stay current with industry trends, regulations, and cost drivers to keep estimates competitive.
Skills:
Deep knowledge of excavation and grading processes, means, and methods.
Strong understanding of earthwork production rates and equipment selection.
Proficiency in reading and interpreting schematics and blueprints.
Excellent organizational and time management skills.
Attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills for collaborating with clients and internal teams.
Ability to problem-solve and make confident decisions under pressure.
