Description
The Medium Voltage Specialist will support commissioning, maintenance, and troubleshooting of SMA's medium-voltage (MV) power conversion and distribution equipment. The Specialist ensures the safe and reliable integration of SMA PV and energy storage systems into the electrical grid. This role involves working directly with customers, contractors, and internal engineering teams to deliver technical support and maintain optimal system performance.
Requirements: Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or related technical field; equivalent industrial/military experience accepted
5+ years of hands-on experience with medium-voltage equipment (5kV-35kV) in power generation, transmission, or distribution
Strong knowledge of protective relays, breakers, transformers, and switchgear
Experience with acceptance testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting of MV systems
Ability to read and interpret electrical one-line diagrams, schematics, and wiring diagrams
Familiarity with SCADA systems, PLCs, and remote monitoring equipment preferred
Excellent communication, customer service, and mentoring skills
Valid driver's license and clean driving record
Ability to travel extensively in the U.S. with occasional international assignments
Responsibilities:
Install, commission, test, and maintain SMA medium-voltage switchgear, transformers, inverters, and associated electrical systems
Perform acceptance testing, protective relay testing, and system verification on MV equipment
Troubleshoot and repair electrical faults, protection system issues, and control system malfunctions
Support field engineering teams with system startup, grid compliance testing, and utility coordination
Train customers, site personnel, and contractors on MV products, system operation, and safety practices
Provide advanced technical support for complex MV system issues; escalate to engineering as needed
Maintain accurate service documentation, test reports, and compliance records
Ensure strict adherence to OSHA, NFPA 70E, NEC, and utility-specific safety standards
Physical & Work Requirements:
Ability to lift 50 lbs. and work outdoors in varying environmental conditions (heat, cold, confined spaces, elevated work areas)
Comfortable working around high-voltage electrical equipment with full adherence to PPE and safety protocols
Availability for extended travel and on-call work as required
