Overview:

The Produce Buyer is responsible for managing the full sourcing process for fresh produce and other perishable items. This role focuses on ensuring food safety, maintaining consistent supply, optimizing costs, improving quality, and fostering innovation across our produce department.

Key Responsibilities

Primary owner for organic produce and perishable sourcing.

Conduct detailed market and spend analyses, assess risks, and develop long-term strategies to strengthen supplier networks and meet business objectives.

Build and maintain strong supplier relationships.

Continuously enhance supplier programs by leveraging data, supplier relationship management (SRM), and ongoing process improvements.

Ensure compliance with product specifications, food safety standards, sustainability practices, and regulatory requirements.

Identify and address potential supply chain, quality, cost, or compliance risks through proactive analysis and contingency planning.

Develop backup supply plans and streamline product movement to reduce waste and inventory challenges.

Use forecasting tools, data analytics, and supplier input to guide purchasing decisions and optimize operations.

Share insights on market trends and customer demand to influence category strategies.

Assist with setting price parameters and achieving sales and margin goals.

Partner with local suppliers to source seasonal and specialty products aligned with customer preferences.

Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

At least 5 years of experience in category management, supply chain, or procurement within the food industry—preferably in high-volume, multi-location retail or produce/perishables.

Strong background in supplier negotiations.

Strong computer and data analytics skills, and supply chain tools to inform decision-making. Oracle EPR experience a plus.

Knowledge of sustainable agriculture, regenerative farming practices, and relevant certifications (e.g., organic, fair trade, animal welfare).

Proven ability to efficiently manage the flow of perishable products through complex distribution channels.

Excellent communicator and relationship builder with cross-functional partners, suppliers, farmers, and growers.

$80,000 - $90,000 / year (based on experience)
