Environmental Action Volunteer

Raritan Township is looking for volunteers to help its’ Environmental Commission, Open Space Committee and Green Team. These groups seek to improve our environment, preserve open space, implement sustainable practices and generally make Raritan Township a better place to live.
There are a number of volunteer opportunities available, details are below (but don't feel limited by the list- if you're passionate about another goal, we'd love to discuss it). Gardening:
Help maintain the Native Plant & Pollinator Gardens and the rain gardens at the Municipal Building and Morales Preserve. You can help by watering over the summer, planting in the spring and fall and periodically weeding. Planting & Maintaining Native Trees:
Raritan Township recently received a grant and planted many native trees and bushes at Mine Brook Park- they need to be periodically checked to ensure protective tubes & fencing are still in place and vines are not encoaching. Trail Maintenance : Raritan Township has over 1200 acres of preserved open space, some with trails and others where trails are planned. Volunteers are needed for trail construction, marking and maintenance. Marketing

Inform the community about our events and accomplishments: promote us on social media, help with website design, contact local media. Sustainable Jersey actions : Sustainable Jersey is an organization that promotes environmentally sustainable activities. They have over 100 'actions’ which municipalities can complete to earn points towards certification. Raritan Township is currently Bronze Certified. By completing additional actions, we hope to achieve Silver certification within two years. Actions include energy conservation & audits, storm water management, recycling, food security, community outreach and much more (for a full list of Sustainable Jersey actions see: https://www.sustainablejersey.com/actions/ ). Volunteers can work on any actions they are passionate about. Annual Road Clean-up : Volunteers are needed to clear Township roads of roadside debris. Working in groups, 1-2 miles of roads are designated for clean-up.
