Position Summary:

We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Per Diem Research Nurse Practitioner at the NYU Langone Brooklyn Clinical Research Center.

Through the practice of professional nursing, with adherence to research protocol, the successful candidate will provide care to participants enrolled in clinical trials, working independently under the general supervision of the Principal Investigator (PI), nurse practitioner manager, and research center management.

The ideal candidate possesses competency in clinical research nursing, including familiarity with and application of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines and federal regulations that govern the conduct of human subject research as well as NYUs Institutional Review Board.

Licensure as a Family Health Nurse Practitioner is strongly preferred.

Hours/schedule may vary depending on the needs of the Clinical Research Center.

Job Responsibilities:

Clinical

:

Functions as an integral part of the clinical research team, including acting as sub-investigator on clinical research trials.

Provides care for research participants located in NYULH Brooklyn Clinical Research Center, with potential for travel to other research sites in Manhattan.

Provides patients with thorough explanation of trials prior to obtaining Informed Consent and provides patient education throughout the course of the trial.

Completes research visits and obtains Informed Consent with English and non-English speaking individuals, utilizing interpreter services as indicated.

Completes outpatient, inpatient, and virtual trial visits, including history, physical exams, and psychosocial assessments.

Participates in development of treatment plans, interprets lab test results, and diagnostic procedure results.

Familiar with study protocol, including inclusion and exclusion criteria, and assists with pre-screening activities as needed. Conducts a thorough screening visit for potential trial participants. Works with the PI(s) to determine eligibility.

Oversees and, as needed, participates in collection of vital signs, anthropometrics, and specimen collection for adults and pediatrics participants.

Orders and administers appropriate test medication/treatments, in accordance with trial protocol.

Promptly identifies and addresses any untoward events/adverse events to ensure patient safety. Discusses these issues with the PI and other relevant parties.

Prescribes medical therapy, devices, physical and occupational therapy, and home health services, per research study protocol. Prescribes medications according to New York State law, including controlled substances with DEA authorization, when indicated.

Orders customary laboratory, radiological, and diagnostic studies per practice protocols, differentiates between normal/abnormal findings and follows protocols for abnormal findings and consults with PI and specialty providers.

Triages and responds to patient telephone calls, screens incoming laboratory data, discusses data with patients, and takes appropriate action when results require prompt intervention.

Facilitates the continuity of care across the continuum of services, other facilities, and appointments with other healthcare providers.

Assists staff with queries from the sponsor or other agencies.

Collaboration

:

Works collaboratively with the PI, consulting physicians, nursing, and other disciplines to identify, develop, and implement and address issues involving clinical studies. Actively participates in meetings relevant to those studies.

Communication/Documentation

:

Promptly and accurately completes all source documentation required of the study, including placing Epic notes during in-person or telemedicine visits and phone calls as well as entering data into study-supplied electronic or paper databases and forms.

Maintains appropriate records of supplies and investigational drugs in protocols studies as required by government, hospital, and FDA regulations.

Reports promptly and accurately all significant clinical events to the PI, nurse practitioner manager, coordinators, and other relevant study teams.

Ensures Serious Adverse Events and other reportable events are reported per protocol and according to regulatory requirements and timeframes.

Continuous Learning

:

Promotes own professional growth and development in research role and maintains current expertise in area of practice.

Serves as a resource to peers and works collaboratively with other disciplines within the area of expertise.

Participates in designated activities related to professional nursing standards and regulations of relevant outside agencies.

Demonstrates knowledge of the organizations Service Standards and incorporates them into the performance of responsibilities.

Patient/Staff Education

:

Provides patients/families instruction with teaching materials pertinent to protocol, medication, and disease management.

Educates patients regarding their condition and treatment plans, including but not limited to the following areas: understanding the disease process, understanding the protocol-specified treatment, understanding potential side effects, providing education regarding management of side effects, providing education regarding laboratory abnormalities, interpreting and providing education related to scan results.

Provides consultation about the therapeutic regimen to the nursing staff responsible for the patients care in the hospital setting.

Population/Age Specific Standards

:

Comfortable and licensed to care for patients of all ages, from infant to elderly.

Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development when caring for patients of various ages (i.e., neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, geriatric).

Exhibits cultural competencies of underserved populations as it relates to race/ethnicity, gender, and sexual orientation.

Administrative

:

Coordinates and supervises research activities of clinical research studies conducted by principal investigator at NYULH Brooklyn CRC Center.

Participates in monitoring/maintaining a safe environment for staff, visitors, and patients through hazard-identification and reporting accident prevention.

Complies with filing guidelines for patients enrolled in clinical trials.

Promptly reports to clinician all untoward reactions observed during the course of treatment, and all potentially serious reactions.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

To qualify you must have:

Education: Masters and/or Doctoral Degree in Nurse Practitioner Program;

Licensure: Current license as Professional Registered Nurse and current registration as Nurse Practitioner (NP) in New York State;

NPs with less than 3600 practice hours: Establishes a written Collaborative Practice Agreement with an NYULH physician;

Credentialed through the Credentialing Committee of the Medical Board with approved Delineation of Privileges;

Nurse Practitioner National Board Certification required or obtained within one year of employment.

DEA

BLS

Technology: Proficient in using various Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint and Outlook. Familiarity with internet applications.

Communication/Organization/Learning: Effective verbal and written communication skills, and strong analytic, organizational and interpersonal skills.

Ability to interface effectively with all levels of management and work and communicate effectively with both internal and external customers.

Have the ability to make decision independently, time manage, multi-task and prioritize work.

Possess commitment to continuous learning as required by department administration..

Required Licenses:

Registered Nurse License-NYS, Nurse Practitioner-NYS

Preferred Qualifications:

At least 3-5 years of clinical nursing practice in the care of the patient population served and ability to apply nursing process toward achievement of specific outcomes in an organized fashion.

Previous experience as a nurse practitioner required.

Qualified candidates must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.

Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need.
