PURPOSE

The CNA performs routine patient care activities for the acute, swing bed patients to promote their comfort and contribute to their individualized patient care plan.

FUNCTIONS

The CNAs assigned to patients in the medical/surgical unit perform the following duties according to established policies and procedures:

The C.N.A. is an employee who provides direct patient care and is required to have and must maintain current BLS certification.

The CNA performs such patient care activities as answering call lights to determine patient's needs and assist the patient as indicated. The position requires bathing, dressing, and undressing of patients: serving and collecting of food trays; feeding patients that require help; monitoring patient intake and output; and transporting patients upon admission or discharge.

The CNA is required to train on the Meditech computer system and pass competency testing on all modules needed for patient documentation and accessing.

The CNAs assigned to swing bed patients perform the following duties:

The CNAs provides personal and daily living care for swing bed patients. This includes bathing, dressing, and undressing patients; serving and collecting food trays and feeding requiring help; transporting residents or assisting them in ambulation; getting them in and out of bed and turning in bed; providing hair, fingernail, and toenail care; and shaving and providing oral hygiene. This position assists with and encourages patient participation in programs and activities.

The CNAs assists in the medical care of swing bed patients by assisting in rehabilitative exercises; monitoring and documenting intake and output; collecting specimens; addressing hygiene needs; and recording vital signs such as temperature, pulse and respiratory rates, and weights.

Throughout patient contact activities, this position reports any observed changes in patient condition. This position may perform additional duties as requested or required.

The duties of the CNAs are defined in established procedures and practices. The incumbent receives job training through nursing orientation and in-service programs. Patient assignments are made at the beginning

of each shift with specific care activities designated in patient records and through verbal instruction. Immediate action is required when adverse patient conditions occur, e.g., contacting the Shift Supervisor, Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse providing assistance according to established procedure.

Requirements

Knowledge and Experience:

The position of CNA requires an individual able to work as a member of a healthcare team and requires that the individual be able to learn and perform routine patient care activities; learn medical terminology; follow verbal and written instructions; have the physical strength to assist patients in ambulating, turning in bed, and transferring in and out of bed or wheelchair; demonstrate tactful, courteous and diplomatic manners with residents, their families, and co-workers. Successful completion of State of Kansas certification in nursing assistant skills, as well as, ability to use computer software for patient assessments.
