Position Summary:
The Emergency Services Director oversees the growth and development of their department(s) in alignment with the nursing department objectives and CMH Services. This role provides effective leadership, clinical excellence, professional development, teamwork, accountability, and business management for the unit(s). Essential Duties Lead and support direct care nurses to achieve the organizations mission, vision and values. Assess nursing practice, standards of care, and work environment using data from staff satisfaction surveys, safety goals, patient satisfaction, performance improvement, and nurse-sensitive indicators; identify opportunities for improvement. Utilize the Performance Improvement Model (P-D-CA) to initiate change and develop systems that support safe, effective, efficient, timely and equitable patient care. Provide a safe work environment and uphold the ANA Code of Ethics and ENA standards for emergency services practice; educate patients on the Patients Bill of Rights and nurses on the Bill of Rights for Nurses. Foster professional autonomy, collaboration, and accountability; involve emergency nurses in decision-making and changes to improve care and practice. Support staff development, coaching, mentoring, and performance evaluations; maintain strong professional relationships. Promote cultural competency, fairness, teamwork, conflict resolution, and positive staff engagement. Ensure regulatory compliance, quality improvement, and dissemination of best practices; monitor outcomes and initiate action plans as needed. Coordinate interdepartmental collaboration and ensure a safe environment conducive to wellness for patients and staff.
Management and Operations Develop and monitor budgets, staffing, and resource utilization; propose capital, FTE and expense needs; align with hospital strategic plans. Lead human resource management for the designated area; ensure adequate staffing and develop department goals and plans. Collaborate with CNO/Senior Leadership for planning, succession, and development; contribute to unit and hospital strategic initiatives. Develop business plans and operational plans to support CMHC goals; participate in organizational marketing and new service lines as appropriate. Ensure policies reflect evidence-based practice and regulatory requirements; ensure resources are available and functional. Empower nurses to identify staffing needs and promote professional development through committees and education programs.
Qualifications Current nursing registration in the State of Maine. Masters of Science in Nursing (or actively pursuing) or equivalent higher degree; national specialty nursing certification required. Minimum five years of progressive leadership experience across patient care areas.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Ability to engage patients and teams using CMH Experience Standards. Ability to direct and triage in a highly dynamic operational environment; collaborate across management levels. Effective communication, relationship-building, and problem-solving skills; commitment to teamwork and continuous improvement. Knowledge of quality, safety, performance improvement, and regulatory requirements; ability to develop and implement action plans to improve patient outcomes.
