Driscoll’s
About the Opportunity
Driscoll's has a Mission to delight consumers in alignment with its customers and berry growers. In R&D, this means creating and optimizing new berry varieties that are best-in-class for flavor while ensuring the long-term success of our customers and growers. This Mission is driven by a Win with Flavor strategy, where the Genomics Lead will set the vision and technical direction for a pan-genome foundation supporting R&D in breeding, breeding analytics, consumer insights, flavor metabolomics, plant health, physiology, and postharvest innovation to create industry-leading varieties. The Genomics Lead will sit on the R&D Management Team, collaborating across these functions to integrate the most relevant advances in plant genomics into new variety development to drive Driscoll's Mission forward.
Responsibilities
• Provide strategic leadership in polyploid pan-genomics across Driscoll's berries, creating a vision for building a pan-genome foundation to drive future genotyping, sequencing, precision breeding, and gene discovery innovations.
• Manage the generation, curation, and primary analysis of sequence data for multiple R&D applications, using and supervising the application of R, Python, and other Unix-based methods.
• Closely collaborate and align with internal groups to enable others in the application of pan-genome insights across the R&D organization, integrating existing tools where available or building custom bioinformatic pipelines and IT solutions.
• Supervise a cross-functional team who manages Driscoll's genotyping, sequencing, and multiomics integrations, mentoring the team in genomics and professional development.
• Serve as a technical subject matter expert in projects involving gene discovery, genome assembly, genome visualization, haplotype analysis, gene annotation, sequence-based genotyping, SNP panels, and bioinformatic solutions.
• Develop and lead hands-on training and consultations to accelerate the broad adoption of genomics by global R&D scientists.
• Be a leader in a culture of organized data and reproducible science, supporting both Next Generation Breeding and other teams collaborating towards enterprise goals.
• Manage the associated budget associated with Driscoll's plant genomics workflows.
Candidate Profile
• PhD in Genomics, Genetics, Plant Breeding, Bioinformatics, or a related field with significant exposure to modern breeding methods and technologies.
• Five or more years of industry experience in genomics and R&D.
• Polyploid pan-genomes: Genome assembly, haplotype and genome visualization, copy number variation.
• DNA/RNA/marker data alignment, filtration, assembly tuning, SNP panel development, low-pass whole-genome sequencing, imputation, and genotyping-by-sequencing.
• Applying R, Python, Unix and related third-party tools in genomics.
