Summary of Position
The Volunteer and Community Outreach Coordinator at the LC Valley Shelter oversees the volunteer program and special event coordination, ensuring recruitment, training, equipping, scheduling, and appreciation of volunteers across all departments. This role also coordinates community partnerships and supports the shelter's ministry through events and outreach, with a focus on service to men, women, and women with children.
Ministry Requirement

Key Result Area #1: Management of Volunteer Department Host monthly volunteer orientations and facility tours Conduct volunteer interviews, spiritual assessments, and background/reference checks within 2 weeks of application Assign volunteers to departments with clear job descriptions, training, and emergency/safety protocols Track 45- and 90-day assessments for new volunteers Maintain communication with department heads to assess and respond to volunteer needs Address volunteer/staff conflicts using biblical and organizational conflict resolution processes Utilize VOMO and Virtuous systems to track volunteer info, hours, and engagement Maintain volunteer stats and report monthly to the Director of LC Valley and Director of Community Engagement Celebrate birthdays, milestones, and send encouragements as needed Plan and execute annual Volunteer Appreciation event Coordinate service groups, church groups, and seasonal teams for projects and holiday events Collaborate with Development and attend assigned interdepartmental meetings Submit timely correspondence, receipts, and reports Participate in strategic planning, align SMART goals/WIGs with ministry direction Key Result Area #2: Community and Event Coordination
Plan, execute, and support internal and external events (e.g., LC Valley events, seasonal celebrations, trainings, donor visits, etc.) Lead logistics including BEOs, hospitality closet inventory, supply purchases, volunteer staffing, and event setup/teardown Attend planning and debrief meetings with relevant teams Support larger UGM events as assigned (e.g., Annual Gathering, Evergreen Conference, Commencement) Provide training for volunteers and residents participating in events Support community visibility and engagement through tours, outreach, and collaboration with local partners Other Duties: This job description is not intended to be exhaustive. Employees are expected to be flexible and may be required to perform other duties as needed to support the mission of Union Gospel Mission and the operations of the LC Valley Shelter.
Skills & Qualifications
Committed Christian, able, and willing to model servant-leadership and interested in being part of a ministry for the poor, homeless, drug addicted and mentally ill. Grounded in the Christian faith as a mature, active member of the body of Christ. In accordance with Union Gospel Mission Statement of Purpose, Statement of Vision, and Statement of Faith.
Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills Experience working with vulnerable populations (homeless, addicted, mentally ill) Organized, proactive, able to manage multiple projects independently Technologically proficient (Word, Excel, Outlook, database systems, VOMO, Virtuous) Able to train, lead, and collaborate with staff and volunteers Insightful, trustworthy, strong work ethic, and appropriate boundaries Minimum 3 years sobriety (if in recovery) Valid WA or ID Driver's License Yearly TB clearance and background check required Working Conditions / Physical Requirements
Occasionally = 1%-33%; Frequently = 34%-66%; Continuously = 67%-100%
Work is primarily indoors and may require climbing three flights of stairs, sitting, standing, bending, reaching, and going from building to building - continuously. Requires ability to lift and /or move 10-25 lbs. - frequently. Requires working with a diverse population, many of whom struggle with homelessness, addiction, and mental illness - continuously. Requires a sustained level of high energy, stamina, and the ability to move about all of the facilities on a regular and ongoing basis - frequently. Requires the ability to hear, see, and speak clearly - continuously. Education & Experience
Associate degree or equivalent experience in nonprofit or ministry work 1-2 years coordinating volunteers and planning events Familiarity with volunteer management systems and donor relations preferred Requirements:
