PURPOSE
This role is to lead, inspire, and drive excellence within the design engineering department. You will oversee the development and implementation of departmental processes, ensuring optimal product functionality and cost efficiency. As a fully competent professional, you will guide the team in meeting short- and long-term strategic planning and implementation goals while providing input, ideas, and direction during design and development. Your leadership will be instrumental in mastering staffing, communication, scheduling, task execution, problem resolution, and administrative duties.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES Collaborate with internal and external customers to establish requirements that meet desired outputs while suggesting alternatives that align with company directives. Maintain regular review meetings with personnel for updates on project status and drive timely completion of tasks. Communicate technical knowledge, project status, specification, design, and business direction to an extended audience of internal and external customers. Implement and maintain group goals, and mentor engineers, to achieve department goals while providing regular feedback related to performance metrics. Develop and communicate employee reviews that include performance metrics, goals, expected results, and career development guidelines. Responsible for recruiting, hiring, and staffing to meet departmental goals. Effectively manage time and resources to maintain continuous departmental operations. Take verbal and/or written directions on projects, training, department/company policies, or objectives. Define, maintain, and report variances against assigned cost center budgets. Implement methods and processes that align with departmental goals and cost targets. Support an environment that promotes safety, cleanliness, and quality of workmanship. Assign tasks for training and career development purposes. Mentor engineers to creatively develop solutions using a systematic approach. Coordinating resources to assign and complete tasks while ensuring execution of departmental processes. Lead and/or participate on teams to accomplish tasks, processes, and corporate directives. Travel mainly for the purpose of projects, customer support, or trade shows. (Less than 10%) All other duties as assigned. Record daily activities
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT
Capacity to work indoors in an office, laboratory, and/or manufacturing environment. Ability to work in a stationary position for prolonged periods of time. Capability to lift objects or equipment weighing up to 51 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation. Physical aptitude to use basic hand tools in a laboratory and/or manufacturing environment. Ability to travel and/or attend meetings domestic and internationally outside of normal business hours
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor's degree (master's preferred) in an engineering or technical discipline, or the equivalent in appropriate education and experience as determined by management utilizing internal SMC career development criteria. Fluent understanding of the product development process. Fluent understanding to apply project management principles, methodologies, and documentation. Novice understanding of engineering software and processes as applied to the product development process. Competent understanding of tolerance as it relates to design intent. Competent understanding of conducting Failure Mode Effects Analysis (FMEA) and providing technical assistance in problem resolution. Fluent understanding of common corporate operations. Fluent at mentoring and motivating others to develop their professional skills and achieve their goals. Expert at efficient use of time to effectively plan and execute multiple duties. Competent understanding to utilize basic inspection equipment in a laboratory environment. (Calipers, micrometers, flow meter, voltmeter, etc.) Expert ability to communicate utilizing corporate office software. Expert ability to take verbal and/or written direction on tasks, training, or departmental / company policies. Expert ability to communicate, in English, with internal and external customers tactfully and professionally.
8+ years (preferred) relevant work experience as determined by management
