General Summary & Essential Responsibilities
Performs general labor in roadway drainage construction, asphalt placement, and other public works maintenance activities. Work includes manual tasks that do not require any particular degree of manipulative skill or previous experience. Work is usually performed under immediate supervision. Assignments will become progressively more difficult and less routine with training and experience.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Performs routine work assisting in building, rebuilding, and repairing manholes, catch basins, sand traps, sidewalks, curbs and gutters, and other general cement and brick work as needed. Performs general labor in street construction and maintenance work; breaks pavement; pours and shovels asphalt and concrete; digs holes; lays sod; assists in carpentry, painting, and other incidental construction work. Cleans streets and gutters, cleans bush from roadside, cuts branches, and picks up fallen tree limbs; collects trash and other refuse, and loads into a truck; and assists driver in unloading at dump areas. Lays pipes and operates pipe handling equipment; digs and back fills trenches; lays sewer pipes; and cleans drainage ditches. Utilizes safety equipment, monitors work environment, and directs traffic to ensure safety of employees and other individuals. Loads and off-loads materials, supplies, or equipment. Operates hand and power tools, standard maintenance equipment, lawn mowers and other small power equipment, and County vehicles as required. Provides exceptional customer assistance, problem-solving, and/or complaint resolution by all forms of communication. Min. Education, Licenses and Certifications
Education and Experience: An equivalent combination of relevant training, education and experience:
High school diploma or equivalent One (1) year of experience that shows an ability to maintain steady employment in any field. Licenses and/or Certificates:
Must maintain a valid driver's license. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of departmental policies, plans, and procedures. Knowledge of modern office practices, plans, and procedures. Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other job-related computer programs and software applications. Skill in effective communication, both orally and in writing. Skill in prioritizing and organizing work. Skill in the use of office equipment such as a computer, multi-line telephone system, scanner, fax machine, and copier. Ability to operate standard equipment and hand tools used in the area of assignment. Ability to follow written and oral instructions. Ability to perform manual labor, sometimes under unfavorable weather conditions. Ability to operate a motor vehicle. Ability to make recommendations and to use resourcefulness and tact in solving new problems. Ability to provide internal/external guidance and customer assistance via all forms of communication. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with managers, service providers, other employees, and the general public.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS Stooping, crouching, walking, pulling, grasping, hearing, seeing up close, seeing far away, kneeling, reaching, pushing, talking, standing, climbing, finger movement, repetitive motions, depth perception. Frequent lifting of up to 25 pounds; occasional lifting over 50 pounds.
WORK ENVIRONMENT Work requires moderate exposure to one or more disagreeable conditions (i.e., irate customers, outdoors weather conditions, excessive noise, extreme heat, odors, or dust).
RISK/SAFETY CONDITIONS The position requires moderate exposure or risk to physical health and/or physical safety (e.g., exposure to environmentally hazardous material, heavy equipment, assault and battery, communicable disease, etc.).
