to join our Research Support Services contract team. This position is part of the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) initiative, a prominent U.S. Department of Energy national laboratory. The role offers an exciting opportunity to collaborate with world-class scientists and engineers, utilizing state-of-the-art equipment in pioneering research on Critical Minerals and Materials (CMM) and Rare Earth Elements (REE). The NETL plays a crucial role in developing technological solutions for America’s energy challenges, promoting clean and secure energy solutions, and supporting local energy initiatives. Researchers at NETL's sites work towards advancing national, economic, and energy security. In this position, you will support efforts to analyze elemental compositions of CMM/REE samples within NETL's Geological and Environmental Systems directorate. As part of a small dedicated team at the Pittsburgh Analytical Laboratory (PAL), you will employ analytical chemistry techniques, including but not limited to inductively coupled plasma - mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), inductively coupled plasma - optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES), ion chromatography (IC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and pH titration. The successful candidate will possess the skills to operate, troubleshoot, and maintain sophisticated analytical instruments, particularly ICP-MS, along with a proactive approach in developing expertise in additional techniques. You will interpret complex data, address instrument performance issues, and work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to tackle research challenges, managing multiple priorities while upholding high quality assurance and safety standards. Primary Responsibilities: Expertly operate and troubleshoot ICP-MS instrumentation. Provide accurate quantitative analysis of elemental compositions. Perform routine instrument maintenance and calibration. Document analytical methods and troubleshooting processes thoroughly. Prepare and review analytical reports for clarity and compliance with project objectives. Collaborate with researchers to develop analytical methods for diverse sample chemistries. Gain proficiency in additional analytical techniques (ICP-OES, IC, TGA, etc.). Work with principal investigators and team members to meet project goals. Ensure safety and quality standards are met in the laboratory environment. Effectively prioritize and plan analyses based on urgency and client needs. Requirements: Master's degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, biochemistry, or a related field, complemented by 3+ years of relevant experience. U.S. Citizenship and ability to obtain NETL campus access. Extensive experience with ICP-MS analysis, preferably in relation to REEs and energy-critical elements. Strong troubleshooting capabilities for instrumentation issues. Solid comprehension of ICP-MS data interpretation. Effective communication skills for presenting analytical results to technical audiences. Strong organizational abilities to manage high sample volumes in a dynamic laboratory environment. Proven ability to independently manage multiple research projects. Experience in method development and validation for ICP-MS, including quality assurance processes. Collaborative mindset with excellent interpersonal skills. Preferred Qualifications: PhD degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, or biochemistry. Experience with techniques such as ICP-OES, TGA, or IC for quantitative analysis. Background in method development for other analytical instruments. Familiarity with ISO laboratory environments. Salary Range for this position: $100K to $105K. Join a team that believes in creating innovative solutions for a secure energy future. At Leidos, you can expect a work environment that values creativity and ambition. If you're an individual who thrives on solving complex challenges and is excited about paving the way for the next big breakthrough, we want to hear from you!
