What You Will Do:

Administers therapeutic radiation utilizing ionizing radiation under the direction of the radiation oncologist.

Initiates and maintains positive relationships with patients. Exhibits an increased ability to care for patients with complex physical, emotional and social needs, while communicating at the patient level of education, experience and with age appropriate awareness. Acts as an advocate for the patient in a professional manner with empathy and respect with focus always being on the patient and their needs.

Instruct patients on daily procedure, maintenance of marks, and education in regards to radiation treatments and document as such. Will answer the patient questions and when appropriate refer the patient to the nurse or doctor for follow up. Will document such discussion.

Initiates and maintains positive relationships with co-workers. Takes ownership of tasks/ assignments with follow through. Assists fellow coworkers without prompting, to promote a positive service excellence environment.

Responsible for self-development by regularly attending staff meetings, participates in radiation therapy quality meetings and is receptive to new ideas and improvement efforts.

Responsible for daily monitoring for accurate delivery of therapeutic radiation as prescribed by a radiation oncologist. Constructs and/or applies treatment device as prescribed. Reads and follows set up instruction for each patient. Follows prescription to deliver treatment, anticipates changes or cone downs and schedules proper procedure. Offers assistance to other therapist and holds self and peers accountable for following established policies/standards of care.

Assists physician in localizing tumor with or without contrast using radiographic techniques and determines optimum fields to cover volume of interest including treatment devices. Marks treatment field on patient’s skin or immobilization device and documents all pertinent information leading to a reproducible treatment set-up and parameters for calculation of dose to be delivered. Assists with C/T treatment planning as needed.

Demonstrates competency of the linear accelerators, simulator and EMR systems. Operates equipment in a responsible manner to apply with safety standards. Performs warm-up and safety checks on treatment machines, simulator, flat panel, and lasers daily with all departmental documentation recorded. Performs gain calibration on the linear accelerators when indicated.

Notifies appropriate personnel of equipment malfunctions. Radiation safety requirements and policies for patients and personnel are followed. Monitors patient both visually and by intercom to ensure safety and accuracy of treatment.

Reviews the chart prior to the first treatment according to departmental policy, making sure the chart includes, but is not limited to, consent, pathology report, ID photo, field photos, signed and dated approved treatment plan and Rad calculations (as applicable). Ensures that physicist and radiation oncologist have signed all appropriate forms and documents according to departmental policy.

Maintains an efficient schedule, keeps accurate records, documents properly and charges accurately recording all billable services. Schedules patients at a mutually convenient time.

Follows department policy and documents table parameters, time out, patient shifts, SSD verification and documentation, and post treatment dose verification, etc.

Performs diodes, port films, and IGRT when ordered, according to departmental policy.

Enter patients on physician’s quality checklist upon course completion.

Complete charges to facilitate accurate billing.

Monitors patient and machine during treatment and reports unusual occurrences and records patient's condition.

Assist in preparing reports and developing procedures.

Transport patients when necessary.

Maintain patient markings.

Perform patient education.

Participate in orientation of new radiation therapists.

What You Will Need:

High School diploma and/or equivalent and completion of accredited courses in radiation therapy technology.

Certified by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT); RT (T.).

Lift 30 pounds over head and away from body. Lift and move immobile patients.

Perform complex arithmetic calculations.

Maintain neat and orderly reports and logs.

Work in a fast-paced environment.

Communicate effectively, in both written and oral form, with patients and patients' families.

Understand oral and written instructions.

Read and write small letters and numbers.
