QUALIFICATIONS:

High School diploma or equivalent required Ability to follow directions; read work orders or receive oral instructions; to confer with supervisor for all assigned tasks. Assembly or repair of equipment/furnishings. Must have good health; shall be physically able to do the job. Shall be adaptable to working around children and shall be of good moral character. Health examination for new employees, part-time or full-time:

Chapter 122 Article 24-5 of the Illinois School Code mandates that School boards shall require of new employees evidence of physical fitness to perform duties assigned and freedom from communicable disease, including tuberculosis. Such evidence shall consist of a physical examination and a tuberculin skin test and, if appropriate, an x-ray. The cost of such examination shall rest with the employee.

REPORTS TO: Director of Buildings and Grounds

JOB GOAL: To maintain school building and grounds in a safe, attractive, comfortable, clean and efficient condition at all times.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

Keeps all buildings in a neat, clean, and sanitary condition at all times. Cares for the grounds, including the playground, daily by picking up paper, trash, debris, and rubbish. Dusts and damp mop floors in corridors, entrances, stairwells and other assigned areas daily. Vacuum areas if carpeted. Operates various types of equipment, including scrubbers, buffers, high-speed buffers and the heating and ventilation equipment. Performs such duties as requested in order to create the best possible environment for the education of the students, including moving equipment, furniture, etc. The custodian may not open any part of the building for any purpose except for regular school work unless requested to do so by the Principal. On such occasions, the custodian shall remain on duty and be responsible for the care of the building, receiving extra compensation only as provided by the rules of the Board of Education. The custodian may not assign another person to perform his/her duties without the approval of the Principal, Superintendent, or supervisor. Washes all windows on both the inside and outside. Makes minor repairs depending on one's capabilities. Checks in all deliveries and presents delivery tickets to the Principal. Adheres to the work schedule prepared by the Director of Building and Grounds. Notifies the Administration of equipment needing repair. Reports safety hazards promptly. Reports immediately to the Principal and Supervisor any damage to school property. Assumes responsibility for the opening and closing of the building each day and for determining, before leaving, that all doors and windows are secured, and all lights, except those left on for safety/security reasons, are turned off. Conducts periodic inspections and tests all electrical outlets and fixtures in the school to ensure their efficient and safe condition. Performs other assigned duties.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Twelve months or as scheduled. Based on the Superintendent's recommendation, the Board of Education will approve salary.

EVALUATION: Evaluated by the Principal, Supervisor, and Director of Building and Grounds.
