POSITION SUMMARY: The Retention/Learning Support Specialist supports the academic success, persistence, and retention of students at risk of academic failure at Bethune-Cookman University. This position works directly with students on academic probation, warning, Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) suspension, academic dismissal, or readmitted after dismissal or stop-out. The Retention/Learning Support Specialist designs, implements, and delivers academic support and recovery programs, with a strong emphasis on tutoring, supplemental instruction, and intervention strategies targeting high DFW (drop, fail, withdrawal) courses. The ideal candidate is a trained educator with demonstrated experience in academic support services, student recovery initiatives, and collaborative work with faculty and staff to improve student outcomes. Duties/Responsibilities:

Provide individualized and group academic support and coaching to students at risk of academic failure, including those on academic probation, warning, SAP suspension, and dismissal. Design and facilitate academic recovery plans tailored to students' specific needs, incorporating tutoring, study skills development, time management, and effective learning strategies. Develop and oversee tutoring and supplemental instruction initiatives, with a focus on high DFW courses, in partnership with academic departments and faculty. Monitor and track student progress through regular check-ins, progress reports, and data analysis; adjust intervention strategies as needed. Serve as a primary point of contact for students readmitted after dismissal or stop-out, supporting their reintegration into the academic community. Collaborate with faculty, advisors, and other student support services to coordinate comprehensive interventions. Facilitate workshops and other programming on topics such as academic success strategies, self-efficacy, and resilience. Maintain accurate and timely documentation of student interactions, progress, and outcomes in university systems. Assist with the assessment and evaluation of academic support programs, providing recommendations for continuous improvement. Stay current on best practices in academic recovery, retention, and student success strategies through professional development and research. Required Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in education, higher education, counseling, or related field. At least 2 years of experience in academic support services, retention programs, tutoring coordination, or supplemental instruction in a higher education setting. Demonstrated experience supporting students on academic probation or at risk of failure. Knowledge of learning strategies, developmental education principles, and high-impact practices for student success. Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills, with the ability to build rapport with diverse student populations. Proficiency in using technology for case management, communication, and data tracking. Preferred Qualifications:

Master's degree in education, higher education, counseling, or related field. Experience implementing or coordinating supplemental instruction programs. Familiarity with high DFW courses in STEM, general education, or other disciplines. Experience working at an HBCU or with underrepresented student populations. Knowledge of Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) policies and academic recovery processes. Work Environment & Physical Demands:

Primarily office-based with regular interaction with students, faculty, and staff. Some evening or weekend hours may be required to meet student needs. Must be able to work in a dynamic, student-centered environment with competing priorities.
