Database Developer - SME
Position Overview
As a Subject Matter Expert (SME) Database Developer for the FBI Cyber Division (CyD), you will provide strategic guidance, technical leadership, and deep expertise in database design, management, and optimization within the Cyber Technical Analytics and Operations Section (CTAOS). You will act as a trusted advisor across development, operations, and analytics teams, ensuring best practices in database architecture, performance, and security across multi-enclave environments.
Key Responsibilities Develop and maintain SQL and PL/SQL code, including stored procedures, functions, triggers, views, and queries, in support of application development Develop backend reports to meet user needs and provide actionable business insights Create custom scripts to automate database management processes and workflows Monitor, troubleshoot, and optimize database performance to ensure reliability and efficiency Maintain and evolve database schema, ensuring consistency, integrity, and alignment with application requirements Interface with customers, end-users, and developers to gather requirements, provide guidance, and support solutions Provide strategic guidance on database design, data modeling, and best practices Mentor and advise database developers, engineers, and administrators Evaluate and recommend database platforms, tools, and technologies to support business objectives Ensure compliance with corporate policies, security standards, and regulatory requirements Construct and optimize large relational databases across multi-enclave environments (Unclassified, Secret, and Top Secret) Provide technical leadership and mentorship to other team members Participate in Program Increments (PIs) and Agile Release Train (ART) activities Required Technical Skills
Expert-level proficiency with:
SQL (MySQL, PostgreSQL, Microsoft SQL) and query optimization Stored procedures, functions, triggers, views, and complex queries ETL processes, backend reporting, and database automation scripts Database performance monitoring, troubleshooting, and optimization Log analytics and observability platforms, particularly Splunk Containerization and orchestration technologies (Docker, Kubernetes) Cloud platforms (AWS GovCloud, SC2S, C2S) Windows and Linux operating systems
Additional Technical Experience
Experience with:
Programming in Python for data processing, automation and ETL workflow orchestration Lucene-based search/indexing platforms: Elasticsearch and Apache Solr Message brokers (Kafka, RabbitMQ) GraphQL: schema design, API development, query optimization, and integrations DevSecOps practices and tools
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, or related field Minimum of 10 years of experience in data engineering or related field Active Top Secret (TS) clearance with eligibility for Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) Experience with SAFe Agile framework Strong understanding of forensic and investigative data requirements Demonstrated experience designing and implementing data solutions in secure government environments Work Environment
Primary location: Chantilly, VA May require occasional travel for Program Increment planning sessions Must be a U.S. citizen and able to pass a background check and polygraph examination May require flexible scheduling to support critical operations
