Main Purpose of Job

This supervisory position conducts reviews of plans submittals for new and remodeled retail food service facilities for compliance with COMAR 10.15.03 and other applicable regulations. This position will conduct on-going reviews of menus and HACCP plans during plan and equipment reviews for new and existing facilities. This position provides technically accurate guidance to food facility owners/ managers about proposed changes. This position will coordinate the approval of building permits, serve as staff consultant regarding complex projects and reviews, and act as liaison with other agencies for food service facility projects. This position also communicates and provides plan approvals to Food Office staff that will be conducting field inspections on a timely basis. This position also reviews other staff plan reviews and HACCP plan reviews and conducts pre-opening inspections and consultation visits for new and existing facilities to be constructed, remodeled, or materially altered. Additionally, this position will be responsible for conducting routine inspections of permanent and temporary food service facilities as assigned. Inspections include comprehensive, monitoring, HACCP compliance, pre-transfer, and sanitary survey inspections with a focus on risks/ contributing factors of foodborne illness but also providing education and outreach to facility operators. This position will train and evaluate assigned staff member's work and maintain the Food Office website.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Determined by the Maryland Board of Environmental Health Specialists under the licensing requirements for Environmental Health Specialists.

Experience:

Two years of experience performing inspections and investigations to ensure compliance with environmental health laws and regulations.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute possession of a Master of Public Health or Master of Science degree from an accredited college or university for one year of the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Environmental Engineering classifications or Environmental Engineering specialty codes in the Engineering and Natural Resources field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Candidates for positions in this classification must possess and maintain a current license as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist from the Maryland Board of Environmental Health Specialists.

2. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
