The University of Iowa Health Care Emergency Department is seeking a dynamic Associate Director of Nursing for our Level I Trauma Center, which includes the emergency department and transport services. Located in the heart of University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, our Emergency Department features 44 rooms, approximately 60,000 visits annually, and about 1,200 trauma activations each year.
The Associate Director will report to the Director of Nursing for Emergency Medicine and oversee approximately 140 FTE across the Emergency Room, Pediatric Emergency Room, and our emergency transportation system, which includes three helicopters at different locations and two hospital-based ambulances. Our entire emergency transportation system, including the AirCare Program, is CAMTS accredited, reflecting the highest standards of quality and safety in medical transport.
Supporting the Associate Director are two Nurse Managers and five Assistant Nurse Managers, providing leadership to nurses, paramedics, nursing assistants, and clinical technicians. The department prioritizes quality patient care and has additional urgent care facilities and Quick Care locations. Our faculty coordinate emergency department and inpatient transfers and are involved in telemedicine initiatives through the eHealth at Iowa program, bringing expertise to hospitals statewide.
The AirCare emergency transport system serves critically ill and injured patients at community hospitals and scenes, collaborating with various healthcare and public safety agencies to deliver timely, critical care. The department emphasizes education, training nearly half of Iowas paramedics via the EMS Learning Resources Center, and hosts emergency medicine resident programs, including physician and advanced practice provider residencies.
Research, CME activities, and outreach efforts are integral to our mission, with a focus on clinical research and expert consultation.
Minimum Qualifications
Master's degree in Nursing or related field, or equivalent education and experience. Five to seven years of progressive leadership experience in emergency or critical care nursing. Experience in and/or leading a Level II or higher trauma center. Demonstrated commitment to diversity in the work/academic environment. Excellent communication skills for collaboration with physicians, staff, and patients. Preferred Qualifications
DNP degree highly preferred. Recent emergency setting experience within the last three years. Experience in an academic medical center and/or Level I trauma center. Management experience with a transport team. Experience working in a union environment. Licensing and Certifications
Current Iowa RN license or eligibility required. CEN, ACLS, PALS, TNCC certifications required. CNML or similar administrative certification preferred. Membership in ENA, AONE, or other professional organizations preferred.
