Principal CBTC System Safety Engineer

POSITION SUMMARY
Lead the safety management and compliance of CBTC railway signaling systems throughout their lifecycle. Perform and lead hazard identification, risk assessment, safety assurance, and engagement in collaboration with cross-functional teams to achieve safe system design and operation.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Lead the safety management process for CBTC systems, ensuring compliance with relevant industry safety standards. Develop, review, and maintain safety documentation, analyses, and reports including preliminary hazard analysis (PHAs), system hazard analysis (SHAs), subsystem hazard analsysis (SSHAs), interface hazard analysis (IHAs), Functional Safety Analyses, and safety cases. Define, analyze, and trace safety requirements from system-level to subsystem/component-level, ensuring integration across hardware, software, and operations. Evaluate system designs, operational procedures, and implementation for adherence to safety requirements and industry best practices. Support risk assessment activities, manage hazard logs, track safety actions, and oversee resolution of identified risks. Prepare, update, and manage safety verification and validation (V&V) documentation, audits, reviews, and compliance checks. Coordinate with system engineers, hardware/software teams, testers, project managers, and suppliers to embed safety practices and processes throughout all phases of the project. Interface with railway authorities, Independent Safety Assessors (ISA), and participate in certification, re-certification, and regulatory processes. Investigate, monitor, and resolve safety incidents, near-misses, and technical issues by coordinating with subject matter experts. Contribute to and direct activities related to requirements specification, architecture, integration, testing, commissioning, and design reviews with a focus on safety. Support integration-level safety activities, including assessment of third-party equipment, review of external safety artifacts, and aggregation of safety evidence. Provide mentoring, guidance, and technical leadership to junior safety engineers and lead safety discussions with customers and stakeholders. Further the goals and positive, professional image of the Engineering Department by conducting business with other MEPPI departments and outside contacts in a timely and cooperative manner. QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Electrical, Systems, Software, Safety, or related technical field with a minimum of 10 years of experience in project engineering, system engineering, systems safety, or equivalent education and experience. Advanced knowledge of rail industry standards, safety and modern safety analysis methods. Advanced knowledge of CBTC, wayside signaling equipment and radio communication networks. Advanced knowledge of vital system and vital software development methodologies. Advanced interpersonal, communication and presentation skills required to communicate with customers and employees. Advanced knowledge of the development lifecycle and lifecycle products. Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills. Advanced computer skills with emphasis on Microsoft Office products and scheduling software.
