Public Safety Call Takers are responsible for the efficient response to emergency and non-emergency calls to include, but not limited to, receiving, processing, effectively prioritizing, and documenting all calls for service for police, fire, and medical assistance from the public, relaying information to the appropriate source for assistance, and performing related administrative duties.
Essential Functions and Basic Duties
Gathers, analyzes, and reports critical information during life-or-death situations, such as crimes in progress, medical emergencies, and fire/rescue incidents. Administers care by providing pre-arrival medical instructions or by directing callers through procedures, such as CPR, childbirth, or controlling blood loss while emergency medical services are enroute. Manages communication of emergency personnel responding to incidents and assists with incident operations during events, such as active shooter and officer down responses. Takes protective actions for first responders by providing life-safety information during responses, such as officer down and MAYDAY calls. Analyzes conflicting and/or limited location information to direct first responders to the scene. Negotiates with suicidal callers or hostage takers. Deploys to the scene of planned events, major emergencies, or ongoing incidents. Operates LINK/NCIC terminal to obtain and disseminate pertinent information. Operates CAD terminal efficiently to document data, events, responder's actions, and annotate call dispositions. Effectively reviews files for missing persons, wanted persons, protective orders, and stolen items. Performs related work as required. Qualifications
Training and Experience
Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an equivalent GED certificate. Completion of CJIS certification Completes EMD, Fire, and Law dispatch certifications. Special Requirements
Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age. Must be a United States citizen. Must not have been convicted of a felony. Must possess well-developed listening communications skills. Must be able to work a varied schedule. Ability to successfully complete background, polygraph, suitability, and drug screenings. ln-service to maintain LlNK/NClC certification for terminal access. Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Computer literate. Possess data analytics skills. Ability to effectively adapt and multi-task. Ability to calm and control stressful situations. Ability to analyze and solve problems. Knowledge of geographical area and agency jurisdictions. Ability to work and remain calm under extreme pressure in a noisy environment. Ability to maintain confidential information and material. Ability to listen to and understand instructions and requests for information. Ability to learn and retain departmental policies.
