Provide proper nutrition, sanitary living conditions, and constant care for park animals. Perform duties in animal/guest interactions, animal training, husbandry, enrichment, public presentations, and research as directed by area leadership.
Responsibilities
Perform daily husbandry tasks including administration of vitamins and medications as directed, food preparation, and maintaining a safe and sanitary working area for all animal habitats. Ensure guest, personal, and animal safety by recognizing behavioral precursors of potentially harmful behavior. Make daily observations of animals and report abnormalities to staff supervisor and team. Maintain animal records, equipment, area responsibilities, and communication requirements daily. Provide and maintain a work environment that adheres to safety guidelines and procedures. Function as an Ambassador by displaying cooperation, open communication, reliability, and receptiveness to feedback. Represent the company in Public Relations or Media situations/events as needed. Assist in education and public presentations to develop speaking skills and stage presence; perform primary roles as assigned by leadership. Train less experienced staff in aquarium skills and theory. Engage in guest interaction programs and provide proactive guest service. Work with animals using behavioral modification techniques under supervision; train behavior to completion. Display leadership behavior in the absence of formal Aquarium leadership and communicate with Aquarium Leadership at a high level. Other duties as assigned by leadership.
What It Takes To Succeed
Be at least 18 years of age. Have a minimum of 4-5 years of professional aquarium experience at a public aquarium or similar field. Have a high school diploma or equivalent; college background in Marine Science, Zoology, or similar field preferred. Must be Scuba certified. Understand animal training, operant conditioning, and behavior modification. Be able to function well in a team setting. Strong English verbal and written communication skills; basic math skills. Be able to frequently lift, pull, push 50 pounds; stand, walk, and work for prolonged periods. Work indoors and outdoors in varying and extreme weather conditions. Ability to obtain CPR certificate and practice safe work habits, including PPE use and reporting unsafe situations. Willingness to comply with grooming guidelines and employment standards; complete all required trainings and certifications within established timelines. Be willing to work a flexible schedule including weekdays, weekends, evenings, overnights, and holidays.
What Else Is Important
Occasional travel may be required. Consistent safe work habits, PPE use, lifting, and reporting of unsafe situations.
