Senior Flight Controls Engineer
Location: Long Beach, CA
Overview
We are seeking a Senior Flight Controls Engineer to help shape the behavior of next-generation unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), from concept to flight. In this role, you'll design and validate the algorithms that keep our aircraft stable, precise, and agile. This is a hands-on position where your work directly impacts how our vehicles perform in the real world.
Key Responsibilities Design, implement, and tune flight control laws for large UAV platforms. Develop and refine autopilot, guidance, and navigation algorithms. Build and enhance system-level simulation models for design and testing. Work closely with aerodynamics, electrical, and mechanical teams to integrate solutions. Plan and execute MIL/SIL/HIL simulations, ground tests, and flight tests. Create test procedures and analyze flight data to verify performance. Collaborate with the flight test team to ensure safe, efficient test campaigns. Required Qualifications
Master's or Ph.D. in Aerospace, Mechanical, Electrical Engineering, or related field. 3+ years of experience in flight control system development. Strong knowledge of flight dynamics and control theory. Experience with modern flight control architectures and Fly-by-Wire (FBW) systems. Familiarity with guidance, navigation, and state estimation algorithms. Proficiency in MATLAB/Simulink, C/C++, Python, and embedded real-time control. Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, hands-on environment. Preferred Qualifications
Experience with flight computer hardware. Familiarity with aircraft system identification tools and optimization methods. Background in VTOL aircraft. Previous experience certifying UAV or manned aircraft flight control systems. Understanding of safety-critical systems and redundancy management. Knowledge of actuator dynamics and sensor fusion. Hands-on HIL/SIL testing, flight test, and data analysis experience. RC, remote, or crewed pilot experience is a plus.
