Girls in Gear
Girls in Gear volunteers needed in Indiana!
Girls in Gear, Columbus, Indiana, United States, 47201
We're looking for enthusiastic volunteers of all
biking abilities and gender identities
to lead our easy-to-follow curriculum. Groups meet once a week across Columbus and the surrounding area. Email Gabrielle Rossi at gabrielle@girlsingear.org for more information about specific locations. Neither coaching nor biking experience is required . All you need to bring is your most joyful and dynamic self - we'll provide the rest. All coaches receive training and are supported by staff throughout their volunteer experience. We supply all lesson plans and coaching materials. Girls in Gear is an eight-week program for riders ages 5+ who want to build confidence on and off their bikes. Weekly meetings focus on a mix of emotional development, conversations, bike maintenance, and riding skills. The goal of the program is to introduce the joy of safe cycling to young riders while creating a supportive environment fostering personal growth. We host unique programs for riders ages 5-7, 8-10, 11-13, and 14+. Each lesson has a theme that ties together the opening conversation, connections to biking, and a skill-building section. In this environment, conversations on asking for help lead to understanding how to change gears on a bicycle; resilience and grit are framed around what to do if you fall off your bicycle; and assertive communication opens up a lesson on hand-signaling while riding. We teach
life skills through bike skills . We find bikes to be an extraordinary tool for change in ourselves and our communities as a conduit for lessons on kindness, compassion, and inner strength. By teaching girls new skills on their bikes, we empower our riders with life-long lessons off their bikes. Our programs are for riders of all abilities with a focus on having fun and trying their best. We meet riders where they are and foster an environment where they can try new skills without fear of making mistakes. Learn more about getting involved in your community at: girlsingear.org.
