Phlebotomist

Laboratory Services Reports To:
Laboratory Supervisor or Manager Job Summary: Perform all standard phlebotomy procedures (venipuncture, skin puncture, blood bank collections, PKUs, and glucose testing). Assist with clerical duties in the lab department. Ensure accurate specimen collection, handling, labeling, and data entry. Maintain professionalism, patient care, and safety standards. Essential Functions:
(Evaluation scale: 3 = Exceeds, 2 = Meets, 1 = Needs Improvement) Verify test name, patient name, and hospital number against requisition and specimen label. Label specimens accurately with date, time, and initials; deliver to correct lab section. Receive and respond to telephone orders politely and accurately. Input and process lab orders in the computer system efficiently. Update and manage specimen data in the Laboratory Information System (LIS). Provide phlebotomy services for both inpatients and outpatients. Maintain a clean, sanitary phlebotomy tray and work area per CLIA, TJC, and infection control standards. Monitor and request supplies to keep inventory well-stocked. Perform point-of-care (POC) whole blood glucose testing. Assist technologists and fellow phlebotomists as needed. Prepare equipment and patients correctly for venipuncture. Understand and follow age-specific blood draw volume limits. Apply tourniquet correctly using appropriate technique. Perform accurate and safe skin punctures using correct device and site. Perform venipunctures accurately, identifying patients with 3-point verification. Explain procedures to patients in a culturally sensitive and age-appropriate way. Draw blood with minimal need for re-sticks. Maintain professionalism and collaborate well in a team environment. Demonstrate initiative and willingness to assist with additional projects. Perform other duties as assigned in support of hospital mission and vision. Qualifications
Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent required. Completion of accredited phlebotomy training preferred. At least 1 year of phlebotomy experience preferred (new grads considered). Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) preferred. BLS certification may be required. Strong venipuncture and capillary puncture skills. Proficient in lab systems and data entry. Strong communication and customer service skills. Ability to remain calm and professional under pressure
