Job Description / Essential Elements:
CREDENTIALED SCHOOL NURSE
Minimum Qualifications
1.
Valid California Registered Nurse License 2.
BA/BS Degree 3.
School Audiometrist Certificate 4.
California School Nurse Credential 5.
Valid California Drivers' License, motor vehicle and proof of insurance.
Knowledge and Abilities
1.
Knowledge of education, health education, community health, sociology or related areas. 2.
Working knowledge of office procedures. 3.
Knowledge of Federal, State and local health regulations concerning students. 4.
Ability to communicate effectively with persons of limited English speaking ability.
Duties and Responsibilities
A.
Serves as health resource representative of the total school health program under the administrative direction and supervision of the Director of Special Education. Reviews all emergency cards and notes health deviations. Oversees the preparation and distribution of first-aid kits for selected classrooms and field trips. Administers first-aid and provides for medications at school in accordance with established Board of Education policies. B.
Performs routine first aid procedures and assists in screening ill or injured children according to established procedures. May provide emergency short-term care to students with asthma, catheterization needs, diabetes or other situations requiring immediate care. C.
Records and maintains a cumulative pupil health record and a variety of health related records and files on all pupils. D.
Conducts meetings with school staff regarding children with special needs and provides site principals with a list of students with special needs. E.
Serves as a resource to teachers/students in the area of sex education (Family Life Curriculum). F.
Conducts meetings with aides regarding playground emergencies. G.
Plans with the school administrators in implementation of State mandates for immunization, Child Health and Disability Prevention Program (first grade physical examination), vision, hearing and other appraisals. H.
Notifies the parents of pupils with suspected health deviations to secure additional professional examinations in compliance with Education Code. I.
Assumes responsibilities for health service office environment in ordering printed materials, pamphlets, posters, and supplies. J.
Supervises students using health room facilities in addition to supervising Nurse Assistants and Health Clerk Aides. K.
Secures health assessments for all individuals with exceptional needs (I.W.E.N.) who have been referred for special education. L.
Services on the Individual Educational Plan (I.E.P.) Committee and Student Study Teams and provides input based upon assessments and/or other knowledge.
M.
Coordinates and/or conducts the vision/hearing/scoliosis screening for the District and makes reports as mandated by the State.
N.
Coordinates and/or conducts routine pediculosis screening on all campuses. O.
Coordinates the immunization programs for the District and makes all necessary reports to the County and State Health Departments. P.
Reviews student records for proper immunizations. Alerts parents of needed immunizations and maintains communication until records of immunizations are provided. Q.
Performs a variety of clerical duties, which include IEP goals, notices and referrals, including PE excuses and accident reports. Maintains files and duplicates materials as needed. R.
Maintains an accurate list of students exempted from the Physical Education program. S.
Counsels students individually or instructs groups of children in health-related areas. T.
Provides information and assistance to students, parents and others as requested. U.
Assures that all required health information is entered on the Kardex and placed in the cumulative folder as per mandate or District policy. V.
Provides periodic inservice to those in the schools who are responsible for administering first aid and as needed on special medical conditions. W.
Serves as a resource to the District and/or schools in kindergarten round-up. X.
May transport ill or injured pupils home or to the doctor's office as required. Y.
May attend outdoor school as acting nurse. Z.
Performs other duties as required to accomplish the objectives.
Relationships

Nurse-pupil interpersonal relationships
a.
Counsels pupils and school personnel in accepting and adjusting positively to the pupil's health limitations. b.
Interprets to school personnel the recommendations made by the health advisor, which necessitate adjustment in the school program, i.e., long-term physical education medicals, advantageous seating etc. c.
Shares medical data with principals, guidance personnel,, deans, counselors and special education personnel when appropriate. d.
Plans and schedules teacher-nurse conferences concerning pupil health problems. e.
Reviews sports physical forms and note physicians' recommendations as when to take appropriate action (secondary schools).
2.
Nurse-parent relationships
a.
Confers with parents at school or in the home regarding their children's health. May also appropriately refer family for evaluation or treatment. b.
Interprets referrals and encourage families toward recognition and self-help in solving their children's physical, emotional, and environmental health problems.
3.
Nurse-community relationships
a.
Plans with school personnel and parent organizations for educational programs designed to inform pupils and others about community and school health, social living etc. b.
Participates in the formation of procedures of the control of communicable diseases within the school in compliance with State and County Health Department regulations. Inform school personnel, parents, and pupils regarding these policies. c.
Be an active member of the School Advisory Committee and the District Wide Committee. May attend as schedule permits. d.
Helps to create an awareness of health services in the community.

Professional Attitude, Responsibility, and Participation
a.
Arranges schedule to accommodate emergency situations at the assigned site and other sites. b.
Attends District in-service educational programs and complete college classes in areas of health or allied subjects. c.
Arranges for and assists the Public Health Department with skin testing programs conducted at the school as directed. d.
All information on students and families is to remain confidential. Nurse may share health information with other agencies as needed. e.
Maintains professional relationship in all activities.
