About the Position
The County of San Luis Obispo Public Works Department is offering a career opportunity for a Supervising Water Resources Engineer with flood control, watershed, and/or drainage management technical expertise, and related project development and management experience.
The position includes leading and supervising engineers and technicians and working with other key partners to implement the flood management program associated with the leveed portion of Arroyo Grande Creek, and, for other areas of the county as assigned, understanding flooding, drainage and water resource conditions; setting sustainability goals; identifying feasible solutions to meet those goals; and facilitating the initial implementation of those solutions.
The Division is also tasked with developing and implementing regional water supply resiliency strategies and projects and facilitating an integrated approach to watershed and groundwater management. It also includes working with the Water Resources Division Manager and four other supervisors at a leadership level to ensure the Division is an effective partner in the achievement of sustainable water resources in all areas of the county.

The Ideal Candidate The ideal candidate will: a) Be service and action oriented; b) Understand the technical methodologies associated with hydrology and hydraulics data collection, modeling and analysis; c) Have experience with regional, watershed and community-scale integrated analysis, planning, and project development; and d) Understand the institutional, regulatory and financial considerations associated with successful program and project implementation.
Leadership, collaboration and accountability are also essential competencies, as water management strategies require timely and transparent vetting, scoping, prioritization and implementation facilitation through coordination with multiple key partners, teammates and stakeholders.
The ideal candidate will also have public speaking skills and conceptually understand software and hardware associated with hydrologic data collection, record keeping and computer modeling.
Education and Experience
A combination of education, training, and experience resulting in the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Examples of qualifying education and experience include: 1. Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related field
AND seven years of professional level public works, civil engineering, traffic engineering, or land surveying experience. OR 2. Possession of a valid California Certificate of Registration as a civil engineer, traffic engineer, land surveyor or other special licensure
AND
four years professional civil engineering, traffic engineering, or land surveying experience.
