The Materials Testing Engineer is responsible for planning, coordinating, and executing materials testing and

analysis activities related to construction, geotechnical, and infrastructure projects. This role supports both field

and laboratory operations by applying engineering principles to ensure materials such as soil, concrete, asphalt,

and aggregates meet project specifications, industry standards, and regulatory requirements.

The Materials Testing Engineer works closely with field technicians, lab personnel, and project managers to

provide technical oversight, interpret test results, troubleshoot quality issues, and deliver accurate, timely reports

to clients and internal teams.

Responsibilities

● Plan and oversee materials testing programs for soils, concrete, asphalt, and aggregates in accordance

with ASTM, AASHTO, DOT, and project-specific standards.

● Review and interpret laboratory and field test data to verify material compliance with specifications and

design parameters.

● Provide technical support and guidance to field and lab personnel performing materials sampling and

testing.

● Analyze material properties and performance characteristics to support engineering recommendations

and construction quality assurance.

● Prepare and review technical reports, calculations, and summaries of testing data for internal teams and

external clients.

● Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and clients to resolve non-conformities, troubleshoot

issues, and develop corrective action plans.

● Assist in maintaining lab accreditations and ensuring adherence to quality control and safety standards.

● Stay up to date with industry standards, emerging technologies, and best practices in materials testing.

● Support proposal development, scope definition, and cost estimating for materials testing components of

projects.

● Perform other duties as assigned to support engineering and quality assurance goals.

Qualifications

● Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Materials Science, or related field.

● 2+ years of experience in construction materials testing, geotechnical engineering, or quality control.

● Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification required; Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred or ability to

obtain.

● Working knowledge of ASTM, AASHTO, and DOT testing methods and standards.

● Experience with lab and field testing procedures for concrete, soil, asphalt, and aggregates.

● Proficiency in Microsoft Office and familiarity with data analysis and reporting tools.

● Strong analytical, communication, and technical writing skills.

● Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in office, lab, and field environments.

● Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record and ability to travel to job sites as needed.

Travel Requirements

This position requires occasional travel, approximately 20-40% of the time, to support businessobjectives and client engagements.

Travel may be both scheduled and on short notice, depending on project needs. Destinations typically include job sites, field locations, or regional offices, where work may be conducted in outdoor or operational environments.

Adherence to all company safety protocols and use of PPE is required during travel and on-site work.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

This position operates in a hybrid work environment, requiring flexibility to work effectively from both aan office/lab and field work setting.

Field Environment:

Work at outdoor sites including wetlands, forests, grasslands, construction zones, andundeveloped land.

Travel on foot across uneven, rugged, or obstructed terrain, sometimes in areas inaccessible byvehicle.

Exposure to varying weather conditions including heat, cold, humidity, rain, or sun.

Possible presence of insects, animals, or natural and man-made hazards in field environments.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to lift and carry between 35–75 lbs. of equipment or samples over distances up to 75 feet.

Ability to stand, walk, drive, and operate lab and field equipment for extended periods.

Frequent use of hands and arms for sampling, operating tools/instruments, data entry, andtesting procedures.

Ability to bend, twist, reach, stoop, kneel, climb, and balance as needed during both lab andfieldwork.

Ability to communicate effectively in both verbal and written formats in varied environments,often while wearing PPE.

Ability to use sensory capabilities to see (including close and distant vision, color perception,depth perception, and focus) and smell for observation and safety purposes
