Electrical Engineer - Charging System Engineer
Caterpillar - Mossville, IL - Building AC Onsite - Primarily based near lab facilities, with up to 25% travel to Tucson Proving Ground and select customer sites.
Position Overview:
leading engineering team is seeking a highly skilled and hands-on
Charging System Engineer
to support battery electric machine (BEM) systems. This role emphasizes system-level engineering, focusing on validation, integration, and issue resolution of current charger designs, with future opportunities in new charger development. The ideal candidate will bring a strong background in electrical systems, power conversion, and cross-functional collaboration.
Key Responsibilities:
System Familiarization & Troubleshooting Rapidly gain expertise in the current charging system design. Diagnose and resolve charger integration issues with BEMs. Support validation activities, including FMEA-based testing. Assist with lab-based charger testing and machine integration at field sites. System-Level Engineering
Work with high-voltage AC (up to 690V) and DC (up to 1500V) systems. Integrate systems involving chargers, switchgear, receptacle boxes, and utility infrastructure. Collaborate with mechanical, software, and machine engineering teams. Future Development
Contribute to defining requirements and designs for new charger products. Participate in R&D initiatives related to EV charging and electrification systems. Required Qualifications:
Education
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering with 5+ years of experience, or Master's degree with 2+ years of experience, or PhD with relevant experience considered. Technical Skills
Proficiency in electrical systems testing and validation. Solid understanding of power converters (e.g., rectifiers, DC-DC converters). Familiarity with high-voltage lab testing equipment. Experience with system-level engineering and high-voltage architecture. Exposure to EMC/EMI testing is a strong plus. Adherence to high-voltage safety protocols and high-power testing environments. Preferred Qualifications:
Background in electric vehicle (EV) systems, especially battery validation or e-powertrain. Experience with EV charging systems and utility-side integration. Proven ability to contribute to machine integration projects. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Flexibility to work across lab, field, and office environments. Interview Process: Initial Screening:
30-minute virtual interview with the hiring manager. Technical Interview:
Up to 90-minute session with the technical lead via Microsoft Teams.
