Grounds Maintenance Worker
Performs a variety of manual labor tasks related to the cleanliness and maintenance of grounds surrounding county buildings. The employee is required to be on duty before, during, and after natural disasters and emergencies, as directed by the supervisor. Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned: Waters lawns. Repairs sprinkler heads, water lines and valves. Mows grounds of county buildings and lots once a week or as needed. Edges sidewalks and curbs. Fertilizes grounds, pulls weeds, and sprays foliage with insecticides, weed killers, herbicides, etc. Trims, cuts and prunes trees and shrubbery. Cleans and vacuums fountains as needed. Sweeps and picks up trash. Polices areas for garbage daily. Unlocks courthouse entrance doors and escalators. Moves furniture in offices as directed. Assists carpenters in duties such as building fences and painting. Backs up Custodian in his/her absence. Education and/or experience: High school diploma or GED certificate is preferred; plus any combination of education and experience equivalent to one year of landscape maintenance work experience. Language skills: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Employee reads work orders and operating manuals. Mathematical skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Employee mixes chemicals, herbicides, insecticides and fertilizers. Mixes proportionate amounts of oil and gas for lawn equipment. Reasoning ability: Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations. Certificates, licenses, registrations: Must have a valid Texas Motor Vehicle Operator's License. Any employee who drives a vehicle on official business must have a driving record which meets standards set by the County and the County's insurance carrier. Must pass a criminal background check. Other skills and abilities: Ability to follow oral instructions. Ability to work under close supervision. Ability to use and perform minor repairs on power or hand operated tools and/or equipment. Ability to perform strenuous work in the outdoors. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts which includes lawn equipment and tools and in outside weather conditions. The employee occasionally works with explosives when filling the lawn equipment with gasoline and oil. While working with herbicides and insecticides the employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals. While driving the riding lawnmower, the employee is exposed to vibration. The noise level in the work environment ranges from moderate to loud and is dependent upon the equipment being operated.
