REASONS TO PURSUE A CAREER IN THE TRADES:
Interesting: Trades provide the option to work with your hands in a fast-paced environment in a job that can vary daily and add a challenging element.
Less Time in School: The path to working in the trades can be a shorter than other career paths but with salaries comparable to jobs that require a four-year degree. This can mean less time in school (or none) and less student loan debt.
Advancement Opportunity: There are opportunities in the trade industry for upward mobility. While some jobs have less room for advancement than others, there are often many opportunities for senior positions, cross training, management, and supervisory positions in many skilled trade occupations.
Selection Process & Supplemental Information
Tacoma Power (https://www.linkedin.com/company/tacoma-power/) is an almost 100% hydroelectric, municipally-owned public power utility, located in Tacoma. We serve approximately 180,000 customers as one of the three operating divisions of Tacoma Public Utilities, alongside Tacoma Water and Tacoma Rail. As one of the most livable, walkable cities in the country, you'll find that Tacoma is a great fit for all interests with places to bike, run, hike, and explore, the perks of a big city, and the charm of a small town.
Tacoma Water (https://www.mytpu.org/about-tpu/services/water/) has a proud tradition of operating and maintaining one of the country's oldest municipally owned water systems. We own and operate over $1 billion of assets that provide high-quality water to more than 320,000 direct service customers throughout Pierce and King counties. Our mission is to provide clean, reliable water now and in the future.
Tacoma Rail (https://www.tacomarail.com/general-information/) has three divisions that combine to move more than 20 million feet of rail equipment over 43 miles of track; 20 million feet is roughly the distance from Tacoma to Chicago and back.
