Job Summary/Description
The Academic Advisor supports student success within the Norris-Vincent College of Business by providing academic advising, retention support, and career preparation services for students. This role collaborates with the dean and department heads to train and audit faculty advisors and ensures consistent advising practices within the college. Additionally, the advisor coordinates and oversees student-focused events, including award ceremonies, career preparation programs, receptions, and socials to enhance student engagement and achievement.
Typical Duties/Job Duties
Academic Advising Designs and monitors undergraduate-level advising programs in accordance with established and recognized best practices. Monitors changes in academic policy, the general education core curriculum, and any other relevant policies, processes, and procedures and communicates these changes to the Dean, Department Chairs, and faculty advisors. Provides accountability and advocacy to students via personalized advising and probation meetings. Serves as point of contact for change of major, transfer, transient, and other students interested in the college'smajors. Understands the academic progress requirements of student-athletes, Carr Scholars, Texas Grant, and financialaid recipients. Builds schedules for students attending New Student Orientation, focusing on creating a balanced schedule andcohort creation. Builds strong, trusting relationships with students. Communicates with students and families about college opportunities and programs. Effectively use advising tools and software to support student success. Maintains accurate advising records. Student Success Initiatives
Identify and target at-risk students by providing additional support via multiple probation meetings and tasks. Assess the need for support services and make effective referrals to faculty and resources on campus and in thecommunity. Plans, executes, and supports college sponsored events for students to include workshops, networking, careerexploration and job seeking, as well as social areas. Collaborates with other university departments like Career Development to organize college-specific programming like the Norris-Vincent College of Business Career Fair. Collaborates with academic units and student service departments throughout the university like the Freshman College and Financial Aid to facilitate comprehensive student support. Respond to and address early alerts and recommendations for student success. Serves as liaison between students, faculty, and administration. Maintain a cohort of students that serve as ambassadors for the college at university functions, provide advisory council to the dean, and peer advising support for students. Administrative Activities
Hires, trains, and mentors student workers that assist with office administration, tutoring, and peer advising. Hosts training sessions for faculty advisors and assists them with providing excellent service. Collaborates with the department chairs to assign faculty advisors and oversees assessment of advising functions. Audits faculty advising forms and reports information back to the department chairs and dean. Serves as a resource for faculty advisors by communicating changes in the curriculum, advising, and registration processes. Contributes to the success of retention efforts through assessment and review of current procedures and programs. Contributes information required for reporting to accreditation bodies. Participates in global conversations on advising and student success through conference attendance and networking opportunities. Assists the college in informing advisors and students about relevant dates, submission of degree plans, exit tests, major field tests, and senior projects. Manages all social media tools and platforms to create and implement effective social media programs, and keeps up-to date with constantly evolving technologies in on-line social networking. Baccalaureate degree and a year of academic support experience. Preferred Qualifications
Master's in higher education; Business preferred Academic Advising Certificate; student development, or related field.
