Dredge Engineer Job Summary
We are looking for a mechanically skilled and detail-oriented Dredge Engineer to oversee and maintain the mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems aboard dredging vessels. This role is essential to the safe and efficient operation of cutter suction or hopper dredges and associated marine equipment. The Dredge Engineer ensures optimal equipment performance through preventative maintenance, emergency repairs, and system monitoring while working closely with the Dredge Captain and crew.
Dredge Engineer Responsibilities Operate, monitor, and maintain mechanical and hydraulic systems on dredging equipment (engines, pumps, generators, winches, gearboxes, etc.)
Perform daily inspections and routine preventative maintenance on dredge systems and support vessels
Troubleshoot and repair mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical issues as they arise
Monitor dredge engine performance, oil levels, coolant, and fuel systems; respond to alarms or system abnormalities
Maintain logbooks and detailed records of equipment hours, maintenance performed, and spare parts used
Coordinate with the Captain and deck crew during anchor moves, cutter head maintenance, spud movements, and pipeline operations
Ensure safety and environmental standards are maintained at all times, including proper fuel and oil handling
Assist with the setup, mobilization, and demobilization of dredging projects
Participate in emergency drills and comply with company safety protocols
Maintain a clean, organized engine room and parts inventory
Train junior crew or assistants as assigned Dredge Engineer Position Requirements
High school diploma or GED required; technical school or mechanical/electrical training preferred
3+ years of experience as an engineer, mechanic, or technician in a dredging, marine, or industrial environment
Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, pumps, valves, and marine electrical systems
Familiarity with cutter suction or hydraulic dredges is highly preferred
Ability to read technical manuals, schematics, and engine diagnostics
Must be physically fit and able to work in confined spaces and outdoor marine conditions
Willing to work rotating shifts (day/night), weekends, and live onboard as needed
Must pass drug screening and comply with all U.S. Coast Guard and company safety policies
TWIC card, MMC, or STCW certification is a strong plus
