Guidance Counselor - Elementary Schools

JOB FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Adheres to laws, board policies, district regulations, school procedures, and ethical standards of the school counseling profession 2. Plans and maintains an effective comprehensive school counseling program. 3. Delivers a comprehensive school counseling program through guidance curriculum, individual student planning, preventive and responsive services and system support. 4. Provides leadership to the Intervention and Referral Services Team (I&RS) pursuant to N.J.A.C.6A16-7.3 5. Participates in professional development activities to improve knowledge and skills relevant to their role as school counselor. 6. Uses available technology resources to enhance the school counseling program. 7. Assists in the organization, administration and interpretation of the District's testing program. 8. Assists in the orientation of new students in the District and assists in scheduling, where needed. 9. Performs other tasks as assigned by the Administration. 10. Works to resolve students' educational handicaps. 11. Helps students evaluate career interests and choices as they prepare for high school. 12. Works with students on an individual basis in the solution of personal problems related to such problems as home and family relations, health and emotional adjustment. 13. Serves as a liaison to the court, other outside agencies and departments within the school district. 14. Conducts group guidance sessions for students. 15. Guides students in their participation in school and community activities. 16. Maintains and keeps secure student records, protecting their confidentiality at all times. 17. Confers with parents whenever necessary. 18. Assists in the development of in-service programs for teachers in the guidance area. 19. Advises administrators and faculty on the matters of student discipline, as needed. 20. Takes an active role in interpreting the school's objectives to students, parents, and the community at large. 21. Serves as a consultant in curriculum development. 22. Arranges for tutors and summer school work. 23. Coordinates and implements orientation program for incoming students and their parents.

Qualifications Profile

Certification/License: NJ State Certification as a Guidance Counselor Education

Masters Degree from an accredited college or university in School Counseling FLSA Status: Exempt
