Position Summary The successful candidate will aid in detection, diagnosis and treatment of disease using computerized, interfaced biomedical instruments to generate accurate, reliable results. The role involves analyzing blood, body fluids, and tissues; examining specimens to detect disease states; correlating and interpreting clinical laboratory tests; monitoring quality and resolving problematic specimens; and disseminating test information to clinicians. The technician will evaluate testing for individual patients, stay current with new methodologies and instrumentation, and participate in training of students, residents and staff.
Responsibilities
Adheres to the laboratory's Quality Control policies and procedures, instrumentation maintenance, and instrument troubleshooting protocols.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Participates in unit-based quality improvement initiatives; attends staff meetings and in-services or obtains information presented.
Recognizes unsafe working conditions and takes corrective action; follows OSHA regulations for PPE when handling blood and body fluids.
Develops, coordinates and provides team support; coaches, mentors and trains Medical Technology Students, Residents and other Technologists and Technicians.
Notifies appropriate personnel for unacceptable samples and records information in the departmental call log; calls critical values to the appropriate person and documents results.
Recognizes system failures and takes corrective action; determines whether patient/test sample integrity is acceptable.
Minimum Qualifications Associate Degree OR licensed by NYS Department of Education as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist, Histotechnician, Histotechnologist, or Pathologist Assistant as per NYS Dept Education Clinical Lab Technologist grandfathering provision. Current NYS licensure or limited permit as Clinical Laboratory Technologist, Histotechnician, Histotechnologist, or Pathologist Assistant required. Strong communication, critical thinking, data reporting, detail orientation, organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills. Basic computer skills.
Licenses Required: NYS-Pathologist Assistant License, Certified Histotechnician, Clinical Lab Technologist-NYSPermit, Clinical Lab Technologist-NYS.
Preferred Qualifications American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) certification preferred. 1-2 years of clinical laboratory science preferred.
