Summary:
The Steel Material Handler is responsible for loading, unloading, and moving steel materials within the plant, yard, or job site. Work involves manual handling and the safe operation of forklifts, dollies, wheelbarrows, or cranes/hoists. This role also ensures accurate tracking, storage, and transfer of steel materials while maintaining records, tools, equipment, and housekeeping in assigned areas.
Responsibilities:
Read and interpret instructions, work orders, and documentation to plan daily material handling activities. Load, unload, and move steel beams, plate, rebar, pipe, and other steel products to designated work areas. Visually inspect incoming and outgoing materials for accuracy, damage, or defects in all weather conditions. Arrange on-site transfer of materials and equipment to meet production schedules. Track all steel materials for each job, ensuring accurate counts and documentation. Coordinate and expedite the flow of steel materials between departments and work areas based on project schedules and priorities. Review production schedules and communicate with supervisors to identify material requirements, shortages, or overdue deliveries. Verify materials delivered to production areas meet specifications and project requirements. Assist in computing material quantities needed to complete job tasks. Compile and maintain manual or computerized records of steel material inventories, job status, and material location. Compare, measure, and identify steel materials by size, shape, grade, and specifications. Read and visualize steel layouts, plans, and drawings to assist with material identification. Maintain housekeeping in material storage and work areas. Safely operates forklifts, overhead cranes, or other light equipment as required. Follow all safety procedures, including the use of proper PPE, and comply with company and project rules. Perform other duties as assigned by supervisors. Education and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent preferred0 Previous experience handling steel or working in a construction/industrial warehouse setting required. Experience with pipe, fittings, flanges, and valves preferred. Forklift certification and/or crane operation experience is a plus. Knowledge of material handling practices and inventory control processes.
