The Office of Chief Medical Examiner investigates cases of persons who die within New York City from criminal violence, by accident, by suicide, suddenly when in apparent health, when unattended by a physician, in a correctional facility or in any suspicious or unusual manner or where an application is made pursuant to law for a permit to cremate a body of a person. The core values of CARES guide our work for communities and inform our behavior toward each other and all those we serve. - Commitment: Dedicated to the mission at all times - Accountability: Responsible to each other and the community - Resilience: Adapt in the face of adversity - Excellence: Achieve and maintain the highest quality - Service: Innovate to meet evolving needs Under the direction of the Executive Director of Mortuary Operations & Response, with latitude for independent judgment, oversees the activities of the mortuaries under the auspices of the Office of Chief Medical Examiner (OCME); performs related work. Typical tasks include the following: Supervises OCME's Administrators on Duty including conducting performance evaluations, handling scheduling and timekeeping for the unit, monitoring time and leave, and providing training and corrective measures. Report to the various agency offices (Hirsch, 520, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island) to provide staff training and assessment, and equipment tracking and maintenance. Performs the work functions of an Administrator on Duty, Borough Supervisor, Communications Lead as scheduled. Monitors decedent transportation functions and staff, including rerouting vehicles and staff by adjusting schedules and assignments as situations arise; arranges for emergency road services for vehicles that breakdown during off hours; arranges for towing by contracted vendor; assists in the coordination of city burial transportation. Develop, design, and implement training programs, curricula and supporting materials, ensuring tracking of staff training schedules and compliance. Resolves issues related to the recovery, and transport of decedents, as well as case check-in /case check out, problems or issues with CMS; works with funeral directors on release of decedents to their care; works with the Tour Commander to coordinate death scene investigations and with recovery of decedents. Work with Mortuary & Response Managers to ensure the update of training documents and manuals. Handle personnel matters including discipline, time and leave, hiring, and other related matters, liaising with Human Resources, Employee Law Unit, and other entities appropriately. May need to perform the duties of subordinate staff to ensure uninterrupted agency operations. Performs borough site visits and meets with Deputy MEs and borough staff. Prepares reports and keeps records. Oversight of the borough offices, and Command Center. Operates a motor vehicle. Performs other duties as required. SPECIAL NOTE: Selected candidates will be required to provide a DNA sample by swabbing. This position has been identified as essential. During emergency events, essential positions may require 24-hour availability. WORK AUTHORIZATION: Authorization to work in the United States is required for this position.
