School District U-46 Position / Title: Principal High School Bargaining Unit: ADM Department/Location: Department of Schools Calendar Days: 260 Reports To: Executive Director of High Schools JD Revision Date: 05/08/2023 Supervises: Administrative Staff and Support Staff Function / Position Summary The primary responsibility of the building Principal is to provide instructional leadership and organizational management/supervision to support the educational development of each student in alignment with national, state, and local educational goals and requirements. In addition, the High School Principal, as the instructional leader, is responsible for all staff professional development related to the curricular components necessary to support the academic and instructional goals of both the school and district. The Principal must stay informed about new developments in curriculum, instruction and administration. It is critical that the Principal develops and maintains effective relationships, including regular communication with parents, parent groups, and the community. Responsibilities include staff evaluation, curriculum development, personnel management, emergency procedures, and facility operations. Job Duties / Responsibilities LEADERSHIP CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION Projects and inspires a positive, cooperative educational environment within the school that motivates and provides direction for all staff toward fulfilling the schools mission statement. Oversees programs and the ongoing improvement of instruction within the school. Ensures curriculum improvement, instructional programs, and all courses are implemented with fidelity according to the curriculum adoption process and in alignment with State standards. Develops and implements in-service activities for the staff. Ensures district-supported common assessments are provided and entered into the student system.
ADMINISTRATION AND ORGANIZATION
Maintains formal and informal lines of communication with all staff, involving them meaningfully in school operations. Directs planning for instruction, including scheduling, registration of students, and building schedule development. Meets with parents and/or parent groups regarding goals, objectives, and programs of the school. Works collaboratively with committees to ensure a teacher/staff voice in processes.
FINANCIAL AND BUSINESS MANAGEMENT
Responsible for all expenditures related to the approved budget of the school. Collaborates with Plant Operations Management to evaluate building needs and provides written recommendations/updates to the Assistant Superintendent.
STUDENT SAFETY AND CULTURE
Establishes rules and processes related to student behavior and discipline in alignment with district policies. Enforces rules consistent with the Student Code of Conduct and ensures security of students, staff, and property. Coordinates with related service personnel and the District Multi-tiered System of Supports Office to support social and emotional programming. Promotes a safe health, safety, and welfare environment; guides after-hours activities, field trips, clubs, etc.
TEACHER PERSONNEL
Maintains a positive ongoing program of teacher supervision and evaluation aligned with the school mission and procedures. Supervises enrollment/withdrawal processes and development of individual transition plans for students.
COMMUNITY RELATIONS
Develops and maintains relationships with the community and responds to input and feedback. Ensures staff awareness of the U-46 community and public relations responsibilities of their roles.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Manages the daily operations of the school and ensures fiscal compliance with district policies. Supervises personnel, including work allocation, training, performance evaluation, and personnel actions. Interacts with students, parents, and the community to maximize learning, academic performance, and social growth. Establishes an environment of mutual trust and respectful leadership. Contributes to policies and procedures to ensure efficient and safe operation in coordination with the Assistant Superintendent. Participates in planning and program development to achieve goals. Other duties as assigned.
Education Masters degree required, preferably in Educational Leadership or equivalent. Professional Educator License with General Administrator or Principal endorsement. Performance Evaluation Qualification (Teacher & Principal required). Doctorate in Education (preferred). Demonstrated interest/experience serving culturally and linguistically diverse students.
Experience / Knowledge Five (5) years of secondary teaching experience and two years of administrative experience (principalship preferred). Experience using formative assessment and other student data to guide instruction and supports. Experience building collaborative relationships with varied groups. Excellent oral/written communication and interpersonal skills for presenting to groups. Thorough knowledge of the Common Core State Standards. Knowledge of learning theory, educational trends, curriculum development, and management of instructional programs. Thorough knowledge of school code, state and federal laws, and District policies. Ability to analyze data and plan strategies to improve instruction.
Physical Demands Will be expected to work evenings and some weekends as required by the schools event calendar.
Terms of Employment 12-month work year. Salary and benefits as established by the Board of Education. Salary range: $132,264.00 $198,409.00; typical hire between minimum and midpoint ($165,343.00).
