Utility Technician

Performs a variety of tasks in assisting and participating in the locating, laying, repairing, and extending underground water mains and distribution pipes. Key accountabilities include setting up barricades, breaking up asphalt and concrete, manually digging valve boxes, guiding pipe sections, tapping into pressurized water mains, flaring and connecting piping, installing repair clamps, operating valves and fire hydrants, investigating complaints, operating pneumatic and hydraulic boring equipment, completing necessary forms, driving vehicles, obtaining and recording water meter readings, measuring pressure and flow, responding to customer inquiries, performing turn-ons and turn-offs, directing personnel, and performing other duties as assigned. Knowledge/skills required include mechanical ability to understand pumps, valves, motors, and other mechanical equipment, and working knowledge of distribution/collection systems. Education and experience required include a high school diploma or equivalent and minimum one year in construction, plumbing, and/or building trades. Certifications and licenses as required, including Indiana DSL license or ability to obtain within 24 months of hire date. Work environment includes outdoor work during seasonal heat and cold, and other adverse weather conditions, with the ability to perform essential functions and meet the physical requirements.
