Under the general direction of the Dean and in collaboration with the Associate Dean, the Assistant Dean of the College of Science supports the effective and equitable operation of the College. The role provides leadership for technical and laboratory services, supervises support staff, manages instructional infrastructure, and ensures regulatory compliance related to laboratory safety and facilities. The position contributes to strategic planning, capital improvement projects, procurement and equipment lifecycle, and instructional innovation. The Assistant Dean collaborates with campus partners to support student learning, promote inclusive excellence, and align with the College’s and University’s mission and goals. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Leadership & Supervision of Technical Staff — lead MPP for the College of Science's technical and laboratory support personnel; supervise performance management including evaluations, training, and development planning; establish staff goals and implement performance improvement plans. Laboratory Instructional Support Management — plan instructional laboratory support; coordinate schedules; supervise technical support for laboratory and field-based instruction; ensure safety and instructional continuity; coordinate cross-departmental resource allocation. Facilities and Infrastructure Operations — serve as the College’s point of contact for facility systems (HVAC, refrigeration, power, digital access/security, sensitive equipment) with 24/7 monitoring; supervise maintenance; coordinate with Facilities Services and external contractors to minimize instructional disruption. Project Management & Planning for Capital Improvements — plan and readiness of teaching/research spaces; prepare scope documents, reports, and presentations for internal and external engagement; represent the College in planning meetings. Procurement and Equipment Lifecycle Management — oversee procurement, maintenance, and repair of equipment; manage inventories and software; approve funding and service-level agreements; coordinate vendor relationships. Compliance, Risk, and Safety — ensure compliance with CSU, Cal OSHA, and campus regulations; liaise with EHS, Risk Management, and University Police; coordinate safety training for staff, faculty, and students. Instructional Innovation & Program Support — advise faculty on facilities and equipment needs for new curricula and interdisciplinary initiatives; support cross-institutional teaching and research collaborations. Strategic and Operational Advising — provide input on technology, staffing, and facilities planning; participate in CSU-wide committees as needed. Other Functions

Knowledge of: Administrative and technical support services in an academic science environment. Laboratory operations, safety standards, infrastructure systems, and equipment lifecycle management. Regulations including Cal/OSHA, environmental health and safety, chemical handling, and laboratory compliance. Materials, supplies, instrumentation, and digital systems relevant to science curricula; capital project planning and vendor management; strategic planning and supervision in a public higher education setting. Skills in: Project management, reporting, budgeting for internal and external stakeholders. Performance supervision and professional development coaching. Cross-functional collaboration with faculty, staff, and contractors. Problem solving related to facilities, equipment, staffing, or risk. Clear written and verbal communication for diverse audiences. Ability to: Plan and schedule support operations to meet instructional and technical needs. Operate and troubleshoot equipment; coordinate repairs. Coordinate college-wide laboratory support for instructional continuity and safety. Develop off-campus and inter-institutional resources for equipment and facilities planning. Interpret and apply campus policies and external regulations; exercise independent judgment; promote equity and student success. Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications: Master’s degree in a scientific or engineering-related field. Minimum of three (3) years supervising a laboratory, including oversight of technical staff and instructional support operations. Experience coordinating laboratory safety, equipment maintenance, and regulatory compliance. Preferred Qualifications/Desirable Experience: Ph.D. in a scientific or engineering-related field. Commitment to transparency and continuous improvement; ability to work independently and prioritize tasks. Technical fluency with Oracle/PeopleSoft or CSU systems; Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.
