Utility Worker I
This is the entry level class in the Utility Worker series. Positions in this class normally perform a variety of unskilled or skilled physical tasks in maintenance activities. Work is usually performed under close supervision and fits a pattern that has been established and explained before work is started. Work is observed and reviewed both during its performance and upon completion. Utility Worker I is normally considered to be a training status. Under the training concept, the difficulty and variety of work increases. Incumbents may be assigned to the position of Utility Worker II after 1 year in the position of Utility Worker I, or when a vacancy occurs. Reports To: Assistant Superintendent of Water and Sewer Supervises: N/A Examples of Work: (Illustrative Only) Installs, alters, maintains, and repairs water and sewer lines. May be required to repair plumbing fixtures, put in water meters, reads meters, operate trenching and boring machine to install new lines, clean sewer lines by rodding out, locate water and sewer lines, make water taps and flush fire hydrants. Performs light mechanical adjustments and assists Lift Station Service Technician in performing repairs on assigned equipment. Performs maintenance on equipment and tools. Performs such other related duties as may be assigned. NOTE: These examples are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed in positions allocated to the classes. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Ability to operate and care for equipment, e.g. hand and power tools. Skilled in safe work practices; follow oral and written instructions in performing tasks in a variety of construction and maintenance activities. Read, write, and perform mathematical computations at a level required for successful job performance. Perform heavy physical labor. Establish and maintain cooperative relationship with those contacted in the course of assigned duties. Acceptable Training and Experience: High school diploma or equivalent. Experience helpful but not required. Certification and License: Possession of a valid Louisiana Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a good driving record.
